I have been known to use The Letter. I should use it more, because it kills.

There are a lot of versions and permutations of this. It's essentially pretending you don't understand what the kids are telling you to do and acting accordingly. "The Letter" is one version that Mark Lewis uses. David Ginn does a lot of this type of thing. For example, he pretends not to know how to put on his jacket, and the kids say "Put your arm in" so he puts his arm in from the wrong end of the sleeve, etc. etc.
Rather than duplicate the whole letter thing, I'd suggest that we all make up our own versions. It'll fit our acts and personalities better, and it will be more original. We all do this type of thing anyway with "turn it around" and similar effects. Hardly groundbreaking, but nevertheless an interesting concept. I do a bunch of comic, non magic warm ups. I do some rasing your hand jokes. I do balloon gags. During hte show, lots of other gags that are part of magic routines.

I also use Rocky among my "stable" of puppets.
Rather than do balloon animals(which so many in my area are real pro's at) I use them also as comedy props. From one balloon being a bow and arrow(arrow is imaginary as a lot of my props) to the old use of a mosquito (mouth) whistle and balloon. With a nod to Jonathan Winters, I used to do 1 minute with a stick. (not a flip stick, but one off a backyard tree limb.... ) Harris have props will travel

I get a lot of mileage from Rocky Raccoon, it's my signature routine. Also some basic hat juggling. The best non-magic parts of my show however are the comedy bits during the build up to the magic trick, lots of silliness and interaction with the kids.
At the end of my show, usually for birthday parties, I include balloons. Just making them for the kids can be a lot of fun, but I often include a "balloonology seminar" where I teach the kids to make a simple "fold-squeez-twist" balloon dog. Afterwards I show them how to shoot a balloon by sticking their finger in the end, I call them balloon rockets. There's a link at the bottom of this post with a photo of my wife demonstrating. It's a great way to fill time with lots of fun activity, with balloons flying thru the air. Often they'll stick to the walls and ceilings (static) which creates wonderful looks of amazement from the kids and adults. One funny bit that I've recently been using is to call every child I meet "Bob". The kids think it's a hoot. When asked why, I tell them "Bob" is the only name I can spell. Sometimes I spell it backwards though. As an aside, I'll say to the parents... "Once I added an extra 'O'" wait for their response... "BoBo, what were you thinking?". Shamless plug... in my book "Kids Think It's Funny" I have lots of material for kids shows. Click here to view attached image. |
