Just be interested to hear some stories about, what got you into magic? and why did you choose the route you took? (cards, coins, closeup, stage etc)

Should have added my reason. It was probably from watching Paul Daniels on TV in the 80's, and it's good to see him still performing these days, and still got the patter. I use to perform a bit in my younger days but gave it up, but still had the interest.
Now that my young son is showing an interest and is starting to perform, it has got me back into learning new material and building things for my son. Wish it had been as easy back in the day to get hold of all the things available these days! |

--I got in to magic when I was 6 years old.. I got Marshall Brodien's Magic kit.
I bought the kit because my grandfather always messed with my head doing coin routines at family gatherings and I could never figure it out.. So I wanted to be a magician. |

I've always enjoyed watching magic. I remember when I was young and watching David Copperfield and Lance Burton tv specials with my parents. But a few months ago I randomly came across an episode of Penn and Teller: Fool Us and that is what lighted the spark to get me to start practicing myself.

My grandfather showed me the 21-card trick and the key card principle when I was about eight or so. I was a bookish kid and hung out a lot at the bookstore near my grandparents apartment, and at about 10 or 11 discovered Scarne on Card Tricks (still, in my estimation, an excellent compendium of self-working tricks, though I know folks prefer Fulves nowadays) and Henry Hay's Amateur Magician's Handbook. The latter was of course a little too advanced for me, but the chapters on card magic were my first introduction to sleight of hand, though I was then too timid to do any card work for people that wasn't self working. I learn some stuff about coins, too, but discovered, as Hay warned, that it was too difficult. Later on I acquired Expert Card Technique (which then was published in Canada by Coles Books as "Card Tricks and Techniques") which proved a fascinating treasure trove though much of it still too difficult for my small hands and level of maturity. I did risk the Dunbury Delusion in front of others, and was amazed that my clumsy card handling was never caught.
I got away from card magic throughout adulthood and pursued many other hobbies. My recent rekindling of interest seems to be due to the film "Now You See Me." I would assume the film, which is a lot of fun, was not liked by a lot working magicians for the same reasons that I, a doctor, never really cared much for ER or House (and don't get me started on Grey's Anatomy). But the opening scenes in which Jesse Eisenberg's character is doing some card work (ECM cuts, a snap change, a sight force) seemed to remind me of how much I loved card magic once. I still have ECT, but the Scarne and Hay are long gone. I bought replacement copies of the latter two (the Scarne is republished by Dover and easy to get, but the Hay is out of print and was a little pricey for an old paperback), and the next thing I knew I was buying Bikes in bulk, ordering used and new card (and some coin) books on Amazon, looking for the lowest price on gaff cards (again, Amazon), asking questions here, acquainting myself with premier magic shop in my town (Browser's Den in Toronto), buying magic sets for my five-year-old (though most of the tricks actually fascinate me more than him), and generally not leaving the house without at least one pack of Bikes on my person, because, hey, you never know when someone might need to see a card trick. Next is joining my local IBM chapter and checking out the work of local performers who make a living from magic. That's my story. Les |

Cousin was interested in it.
Back in the 60's, I witnessed a phone miracle called the Wizard. A short time later, I became "a wizard". Harris

I think this is hilarious and really age me: for my 8th birthday I got a "My Favorite Martian" magic kit (with a picture of Ray Walston, of course with his antennae up, on the cover of the box!). Shorty after that ordered a E-Z Magic catalog from an add in the back of Boys Life magazine. And I was hooked.

When I was thirteen, my mother died. My parents were divorced and I lived with Mom. She died in the kitchen, making me hot chocolate. The police took me to San Jose/Santa Clara County Jail. I spent 6 months there waiting for a foster home.
They came around with a book cart, and there was Greater Magic. I cherished that book so much, they let me keep it! It was my way out! It was my way in! Doug |

My wife wanted to start working with children as part of the motorcycle ministry we were involved in. In addition to a background check she had to view some training material. I watched with her and was curious about Gospel Magic as discussed in the video. She doesn't do magic but she now assists the bystander who got pulled in.

I got my first magic set when I was 5 and I practiced and loved it then I just stopped you know how It is when you are younger on and off from different interests then about a year and a half ago It was a rainy day and I travelled to the bookstore as I was walking in I caught a glimpse of an interesting book which was street magic guide by Paul Zenon and I read the book learned the tricks and then performed for some people at the hotel I was staying at and I think I just magnetized to card magic because the day before I had gotten a deck of cards in the hotel lobby and now that I had some things I could do with them I could practice and then perform and ever since I have LOVED IT!

I unfortunately learned the same lesson bg, with a disappearing paper clip using a pu**. All my friends at school thought I was amazing, so of course I had to tell them how it was done...then, I wasn't so amazing.

I was watching one of those "people are awesome" compilation videos on YouTube and one of the clips had somebody flourishing. It wasn't all the cuts that caught my eye, but the Murphy deck flip. For some reason I just thought it was crazy that somebody could flip the deck asking its axis without a single card flipping out. After I searched YouTube for a tutorial on that and learned it(in about five minutes)I saw a video of a spring. I had always wanted to learn that so I started carrying a deck on me at all times practicing the spring. Of course this led to puerile asking if I knew magic and the response was always a sheepish no. So I decided to learn a few tricks. After learning the Hermann pass and twisting the aces, sleight of hand and the feeling of basically lying straight to somebody's face grabbed a good of me. A year later and plenty of magic books purchased, I couldn't care less about flourishing.

When I was 11 years old my brother showed me a card trick utilizing the classic Si Stebbins order. He wouldn't disclose the secret for several weeks which just got me more and more interested. After he finally taught me the effect, I become very interested in card magic and stuck with it ever since.

My dad used to buy the Exchange & Mart during the 70s. On the back cover was an advert offering all manner of marvels such as a fake severed finger, voice throwing gimmicks, werewolf hands etc, etc. Irresistible stuff for an impressionable 10 year old so when my fake finger arrived with the accompanying Ellisdons catalogue that was it, I was hooked. Every couple of months I'd send for stuff and early purchases included a mene tekel deck; find the lady three-card trick as well as early Tenyo stuff.
Fast forward 40 years and I'm still collecting and performing, except now it's fine apparatus, mentalism and bizarre magic. Nick
