So I have been eyeballing my town and thinking "where's the most amount of foot traffic?" and that got me looking at the University out here as one perspective venue. I haven't read of anyone here working College Campuses, is it generally a no-no or is it that college kids aren't as likely to tip?
Good place to consider? Bad idea? At this time, I don't have any of the standard texts that are reccomended here so I don't have any instruction on how to select a pitch but like I said, I'm just starting to look around and trying to make plans.

(disclaimer: while it may not be in the spirit of some of you hard core fence-jumping event crashing, bare foot vagabond buskers, I have every intention of asking permission where applicable before I show up to busk anywhere in town. Small town and word, good or bad, spreads fast.)

Hi Chris, I don't know, never tried a college. I would think that college kids would not have much money for tips. Perhaps in the campus coffe shop? Let us know how it goes. Mr. Danny

I have a small experience with this. If you ask, most likely you'll be told no.

I've busked at the University of Florida during a semester I did there. No fat hats, but good for books, lunch/supper funds.

On college campuses students will play musical instruments, break dance, skateboard and a host of other activities, so campus police really don't know who is a student and who isn't. So performing a show would be no problem. Hat sizes are on the small side as many are going to/from classes and other campus activities and don't have time to stop. If there is a central gathering zone ( fountains and the like ) they would certainly watch, but hat size would most likely be on the small side ( today, college youngsters use credit cards primarily and the only cash they carry is lunch/supper and soda money.

I have a friend that is a spray paint artist

( this isn't him, but this is what it looks like ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23bA_5yadxs

He does it on the streets, parks, but also at NYU and Columbia universities. They're expensive schools and most of the youngsters have expendable cash on hand and will buy his art ( he has a swiper on his phone for credit cards;-)

I would also think that a campus has a finite population dictated by class schedules.

But hey nothing ventured nothing gained.

I busked on-campus @ UCLA, UA in Tucson, and CU in Boulder - never asked permission at any.
Like someone said above, nobody knows if you're a student or not.
Also, across the street from the campuses are good if you can find shopping/cafes around an alcove.
Anywhere there's lots of foot traffic is fair game in my book.
Strong and frequent hat-lines, of course.
I'd also suggest a Blu-ray/DVD/CD or two on hand to sell to maximize your time. Offer a special discount if both are purchased. "Now your magical experience here with me can last forever!"

Students aren't known for their wealth but may end up suprising you.

A college campus can have 50k+ students. You can perform a few shows before hitting them all.

You won't be getting many $20's as you will on the street ( do a good show and feel good about mentioning that as a donation option ) but young college people appreciate the arts and as The Great Zoobini mentioned, they can surprise you.

If anything, you get to practice if you're new at it. A pretty campus, handsome student bodies...I can think of worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

I've been busking my local college campus for a good long while- it's pretty adequate in terms of tips. College students TYPICALLY only give a 1-2 bucks a head so I'd recommend performing on a place in campus that would get some foot traffic from the outside world. Personally, I've been making 80% of my living off of the starving college student- take that as you will.
OH- also! Don't perform DURING games at the school. Perform AROUND them. Game day is a day when the 'rents come to town and that means people who can actually afford to pay you properly.

I think that campus is the best accommodation for students, where they can get cheap clothes and fun time.
