Alright everyone, I have a not so revolutionary idea, but I do believe it is a step up.
So while reading up on busking wands, most people that I have heard from say that they use a timbali stick wrapped in black electricians tape. Now we all know the issues with this. After a while, it starts to get tacky as the tape subtly shifts and comes undone etc. Also, for me, it doesn't look the best having the tape lines there, so I came up with this new solution. Still using the drum stick, but instead of black electrician's tape, use heatshrink! Half inch heat shrink from anywhere works fine. It slides on and then you use a lighter or heat gun to shrink it to the stink and trim the ends! It provides a much better textured feel for better grip, but without the worry of it getting tacky or dirty looking from use. Also, it is a much more durable finish! I've been using mine now for a little bit and it is working great. Let me know how it works out for you |

I like it.
I just broke my last wand, so I will give it a go, and I think it is a keeper. I will do two. I will wrap one with a couple of rounds of electrical tape first, (for a small bit more cushion), and then apply the heat shrink tubing. That will assure that the electrical tape, which does suffer from repeated abuse stays in place better. Then other one, I will just apply the heat shrink tubing. And see if that alone is adequate. I am not sure that the electrical is necessary under the shrink tube, but I will find out. Thanks for the idea. The Doctor

This is what was done with Michael Ammar's Mercury wand.

Yes, except of course he used a metal rod. Using the drum stick is perfect! Also, he made it so the ends were still shown to create the "magic wand" look. In order to get the ends covered for a busking stick, cut the heat shrink the the exact length of the stick. Then, use a lighter and melt the ends together. This gives it the same look and feel as the traditional electric tape busking wand, but in my opinion a better package.
Using the electric tape underneath is an interesting idea as well, I look forward to hearing your findings. |

I stand by my wand for strength and durability and it "looks" like a magic wand. It's white PVC tubing with black electricians tape wrapped around the body.

I just don't think for a busking routine(my opinion only ) that a traditional wand is the right fit for my show. However I did try using PVC pipe and covered the whole thing in the heat shrink, but to me there was just a hollow emptiness feeling to it I didn't like. But that would be very durable if you like the feel.

Understood. I made it up years ago when I was learning how to do the wand spin - and it's worked for me. But I understand preferences ... Lord knows I have a few of my own!

It would be cool to be able to use the hollow of the wand as some kind of holdout or to some form of advantage. I'm not sure, I am thinking though.

Hollow wands have been used with folding coins, vanishing silk, color changing, multi-wand production, anti-gravity weights.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I know this is an old thread but here is an idea.
Why wouldn't these drum sticks from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Meinl-Percussion-Timbale-Sticks-Hickory/dp/B00275G8DO/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1453608285&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=Meinl+Hickory+Timbale+Sticks+.5+x+16.75+in. Then paint them with this stuff: http://www.lowes.com/pd_42849-61158-1120......WidgetID I used the dip to put on my tool grips. But this stuff is a spray on. For a total cost of about $18.50 for two wands.

Some day I'll tell the story of going on a lecture tour in the early '70s.
I had a starter pistol (loads blanks only). Every airline had a different policy!!!

I do reenactment. Renaissance to Victorian. So I use tiny version of wooden, turned wand. Or chopstick for Chinese.

CHOPSTICK! --Old joke> How do you put a Chinese person on a diet? (Give him ONE CHOPSTICK!)
In his "The Magic of Alan Wakeling" (page 224) Jim Steinmeyer gives us Wakeling's "Cords & Coins", a fresh presentation of the very ancient "Cords of Phantasia". (Remember: Dante's "The Lazy Magician?" Wakeling's presentation uses some old Chinese coins (with a hole in the middle)two silken cords, and a CHOPSTICK. I wanted to give the routine a "try". In New Orleans, I found a store that specialized in Oriental foods, and, "coincidentally", one could buy chopsticks. On display were beautifully lacquered chopsticks, and, plain bamboo sticks. I opted for the bamboo--If the routine worked for me, I could go back for the expensive eating utensils. There were 5 Chinese characters stenciled on the handle end. I was reminded of a gag that Jay Marshall used, with the Chinese Laundry Ticket. He would point out the characters, and "read" what they "said": "GOOD MAGIC SHOW HERE TODAY!" I never went back for the fancy sticks! (No Chinese person has ever corrected my "translation".)

Update:
This worked great. Now I have 2-16inch wands with a rubber like coating and enough stuff to insulate all my electrical hand tools.. Quote: On Jan 24, 2016, Russ wrote:

Is the rubber coating tacky? I'd be worried lint would stick to it.

Not tacky at all.
Just like rubber. I suppose you could make it as thick as you wanted depending on how many coats you put on. I don't think you would need it real thick.
