Hi guys,
This is my very first Magic Cafe message... a little nervous, but there's gotta be a start somewhere! I am very interested in knowing what you guys think about, or what your suggestions are to block/die in a box effects, especially those with no external physical movements (ie where the box does not physically move somehow into a different position etc). My original favourite was Tenyo's Diabolicus, which uses a block of four sides with four of the five ESP symbols. Since that effect has been discontinued, I have been search for something with a similar principle. Any ideas? Recently, Magiceffex marketed a Lubor Fiedler effect 'Roentgen Box', which promised a similar result and that we 'definitely do not know this one', which turned out to be very true. The secret is weird and unique, but is different from the Diabolicus one and is probably a little less superior (though very creative). What do you guys think of Diabolicus and the Roentgen Box? Does any of you have a suggestion as to what uses the Diabolicus principle and is currently available? Thanks! Description of the effects: Lubor Fiedler's Roentgen Box A small plastic box is handed to a spectator. After it’s examined, the magician shows an aluminum die that fits snugly into the box. The spectator is instructed to turn his back and place any value face-up in the box and close it with the accompanying lid. Having done so, the box is then placed back onto the magician’s outstretched hand. Looking at the box, as if discerning something about its content, the magician hands the box back to the spectator and immediately names the correct number! The effect can even be repeated again and again, leaving no clue as to the secret. One could only believe that like Superman, the magician has X-Ray Vision! Here's some points to remember: Absolutely no sleights required! The spectators do all the handling! There are no extra parts! No suspicious moving or weighing of the box when on your hand! No secret lifting of the lid! No, you don’t have to look at the lid, either! Can be performed completely surrounded! There is no way to see through any part of the box or lid! Everything can be examined at any time! Fools magicians badly! Not to be confused for other principles on the market today! You definitely do not know this one! Magician never touches the cylinders! No magnets, transmitters, electronics, stooges or extra gimmicks of any kind! A diabolical principle that baffles both magicians and laymen! Diabolicus This is very straightforward mentalism. Out of sight of the magician, one of four ESP symbols on a block is chosen and placed face up in an opaque box. After covering it up, the magician is called back and, without any questions, instantly determines the chosen symbol! While you'll learn this in only a few minutes, your audience will be perpetually amazed! |

Sounds great for close-up. No, I haven't heard anything about it.

To me it seems very similar to "DIE-CIPHER II". I have Die-Cipher II and it's good, I can't say anything else without giving away the secret.

I am sorry i cannot help you out with your question but i will say that you have peeked my interest! (one for the spell checkers) Sounds like something to check into.

Gio, I also love the 'Die-Cipher II'!
But I suppose the difference between the 'Diabolicus' and 'Roentgen Box' and DC2 is that DC2 actually moves physically (without appearing so, of course), and relies on touch, whereas Diabolicus really doesn't move physically at all. I hope that is not giving anything away?! The Roentgen box also does not move in any way at all, but the method is so strange i don't think is reliable like the Diabolicus... |

I hope that is not giving anything away?! It's probably ok. I own both and I understand what you are talking about, but if I didn't own these items I wouldn't... or so I guess Quote:
The Roentgen box also ... I don't own this one so I cannot compare. Gio |

I feel the the Roentgen Box is very clever. And very practical. If you do walkaround magic, this is one you might want to keep in the coat pocket.

I personally feel the Roentgen Box is more clever than practical. For example, if you do walkaround in a relatively dim restaurant and you already have problem telling what the number is.
Also, I am finding it difficult to do the 'peek' (if I could call it that) without calling attention to it, and the instructions were unhelpful in that regard. Any suggestions as to how that might be done smoothly? |

My one thought with the Roetgen Box is to maybe be sitting and them standing and thus as you lift the box to their hand level it will be easier to do the work.
First I haVe to get the first method to work all the time. I only had this a few days and was tickled that it worked/ I can easily get past the thin plastic box since it is true that there is no way you can see into the box nor can they. So even if they think they see you do something you could hand the box to them and they can not see anything for does the box have any gimmicked parts to fail. COOL! Not great but at the half price sale on shop had it I am not ticked off. Maybe I would be disappointed at full rate. |
