I'm not exactly a beginner. I've performed magic amateurishly for years. Even professionally on stage for a while in my youth. Still, I thought this would be the spot to bring my question.
I have always avoided sleight of hand at almost all costs. If something relies heavily on sleights, I've always simply understood it wasn't something I could do. I own countless books on the subject, but never really understood how to practice it effectively. At some point I literally developed the habit of quickly closing my eyes during a move (that way I didn't see it). Ridiculous I know. Never-the-less, it's the truth. When reading, I've always had trouble transferring the words in the book to my own actions. Then I got to thinking. I've bought tons of videos over the years to learn various tricks. Why not for basic sleight of hand? So, I was hoping you guys might suggest some good DVDs or videos teaching sleight of hand. Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks everyone! Alex |

I've got royal road and the DVD, but I'm looking for something with general sleights. Coins and what not. I've just received the royal road dvd though and it's really helping. I thought I understood a lot from the books only to find out how things should actually look now that I have the DVD. I was a bit off on some things for sure.

I can't think of a dvd that covers general sleights in different types of magic. You have Daryl's Encylopedia of Card Sleights. For coins you can probably start off with David Roth's Expert Coin Magic series.

If you were into Coins, check out Bobo's book Modern Coin Magic and the companion DVD series. Michael Ammar's Complete Introduction to Coin Magic is a decent start. David Roth's Expert Coin Magic is very good. David Stone's Basic Coin Magic DVD is also a good source to check out. After those, I'd look into Eric Jones and his Metal DVDs.
For something other than coins, you could also look into a Spongeball DVD. But I'm not as familiar with those. I have not watched a Cups & Balls DVD, but I imagine those would go over some basic sleights as well. |

Oh and I've been meaning to check out Brad Burt's Teaching DVD's. He covers cards, coins, billiard balls, and sponge balls. I've heard these are really good but I haven't picked them up yet.

I am concerned that reading a book is becoming a lost art. I myself love a good magic book because you can stop and think about it. When a DVD is running that is not always the case

Books there are some really great effects and of course as everyone will probably agree Tarbell is a good start but if you can get ahold of one blackstones books have some great stuff two I have one of his from the 40's how ever if you are more into DVDs ellusionist has a few good street magic course DVDs I had from when I started out and they are still some effects I still use because of the simplicity and the wow factor you get.
If you have a hard time with slights I would strongly recommend this DVD the slights are basic and the tricks associated with them have a great finish http://www.ellusionist.com/how-to-do-street-magic.html If anyone else has anything else to suggest I'll be watching this thread very good topic |

The Complete Introduction to Coin Magic ......el Ammar is very good. I think Ammar is a great teacher, and in this video you get careful instruction, good advice, and good tricks to show the application of the sleights. It's aimed at the beginner, which I appreciate since I am terrible with coins.
Secret Seminars of Magic with Pat Page - Volume 5 is a fine introduction to a popular prop, done by a wise old veteran. Here's a link to the whole series.
There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision. - Derren Brown, Absolute Magic

Try Basic Skill With Cards by Jerry Mentzer. It's a small paperback that has just about everything you will need to do basic card magic. The moves can be applied to just about any card effect you will find where you are instructed to use a particular move without the move being explained. The get Counts, Cuts, Moves, and Subtlety and packet Tricks by the same author. The latter two can be considered companion books since the first teaches the moves and the second teaches effects that use those moves. Good luck!

I'm surprised at how many books are being suggested when the original poster specifically asked for videos

Thanks seraph127! JD Draws Things, if I thought that videos were the best way to go then I would have recommended them. Videos are usually desired by those who are trying to seek an easy way out. They have some benefits that books don't, but in the long run, books will give you a lot more bang for the buck. That's just how we roll here. Welcome to the Café.

Flippin...: But, if it's only DVDs that interest you, I've done a 4-volume set just for you. Go to my magic website (third one listed under this post) and click on DVDs to learn about them. Click on Magic Books to learn about that. Best - HL.

Flippin,
I can relate. I still use a limited number of sleights. It doesn't bother me, since I think that focusing more on the entertainment is key. However, oddly enough, for some reason, I was able to learn sleights the best from Jay Sankey videos. I must have watched a dozen card videos to try to get the pass down. Couldn't do it. One such video (to remain nameless), said it would take years to really learn it. I then watched Sankey on Extremely Ambitious and learned it in a day. I continue to practice it, because it wasn't great after just one day. For some reason Sankey clicked. I think the reason is he came right out and said his pass wasn't intended to be "invisible". He teaches a "workers" pass that is meant to be used with a bit of misdirection. I think that sometimes the problem is you get the absolute best masters teaching something that only they can perform. It's like trying to learn how to play basketball like Michael Jordan. it just aint gonna happen. Sankey, with his tiny hands, teaches it so it is so doable, anyone could do it. KJ |
