Not sure if anyone saw the stories a couple of weeks ago about a 300 year old Stradivarius that was taken in an armed robbery in Milwaukee. It happened locally but the story was pretty widely reported. The violin was on loan to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra when three people attacked concertmaster Frank Almond with a stun gun and grabbed the instrument after a performance. The "Lipinski Strad" as it know, is valued at 5-6 million dollars.
Three people have now been arrested and apparently the violin has been recovered. I hope there hasn't been any damage to it. It was bitterly cold the day the violin was taken and has been very cold most of the last two weeks. They dumped the case (which contained a gps device) so the violin has been uncased and probably in and out of the cold a few times. Anyway it was an interesting story, undoubtedly the biggest armed robbery to have ever happened around here. http://www.thestrad.com/latest/news/300-......-robbery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipinski_Stradivarius http://www.jsonline.com/news/crime/stole......631.html |
