Hey guys
ive been working on this routine, all but a few of these can be found in Complete Course in magic. I have not started on a patter for this yet, but was just wondering what you thought of the effects going together. 8 ft-wand- I pull the wand out of my baseball cape Coloring Book- I show the blank pages first. I then call up a kid that likes to color and have them wave the wand over the book to show the pictures, I then have them wave the wand again and say the magic words, to show that the pages have color. I then take my “magic” eraser and erase the pages. Change Bag- I use the bag to make a scarves appear out of it for the strength test. I show it empty have a volunteer wave the wand and everyone says the magic words and have the kid pull the scarves out of the bag. Afghan Bands- cut a cloth circle into two, one becomes two that are connected, the other becomes twice the original size. Take Apart vanish box- I use it to vanish and appear a stuffed animal. I use a routine that is something likes David Copperfeids. Thank you banner- use it at the end of my show to thank the audience if they are good Square Circle- Dove Pan- use it to produce a cake, I show it empty and tell the kids that we need to bake the birthday kid a cake. We put in all the ingredients the birthday kid then waves the wand over the pan, when I open it there is a cake for him. Foo Can- Fill the can with water, call up a volunteer, put a towel around the kid and “turn the can upside over the kid. When nothing comes out I scratch my head in confusion I then look up as I turn it over me, and all the water drops out on me. (I am standing over several beach towels to catch the water) Sponge rabbits-I tell about how they never like to be alone, and they always want more friends so they create some of there own friends. Type: Comedy Dress: Normal Clothes- Jeans, Bright Green sweatshirt, a baseball cape thanks in advance for the help Paul |

Sounds great! YOu have a lot of classics in there which means you can can really focus on your presentation. I would consider pehaps doing a few less tricks though.
Also, since its a kids show, you might want to dress up a bit more. Perhaps black pants instead of jeans and a bright short sleeved shirt? It sounds like you want to be relaxed and 'normal' but often parents confuse this with messy or unprofessional. (After all, if you look good, your jobs half done) |

Nicholas, You said that he should use less effects, he listed 10. I don't get how you can streach those effects to last (I'm assuming) 45-50mins.

Really? I do 6 effects in my 45 minute show.
But to each his own. Do you think you'll always be able to spill water everywhere? |

Thanks guys, as far as the water goes, I would tell the parents before hand and be standing on several beach towels of my own to keep the floor dry.

Sounds good. I'd probably skip the water on my head not because it doesn't sound funny but because it sounds kinda messy and pouring water over my head several times a day might put a bit of a dampner on my job. If you are going to use it though it sounds like you could turn it into a good running gag.
I don't know if you where listing the tricks you would use in order or just randomy but I'd juggle the order around a bit. The pole is a good starter but the rabbits are a bit small for the finsh. Mix up the volunteer effects with the non volunteer ones. Incidentally afghan bands is a great volunteer effect handled properly. Nice safe scissors though, of course. I don't think 10 effects is too much at the moment, as you perform the routines you will find more and more ways to have fun with the effects and they will lengthen naturally. You'll then be able to drop tricks. I think it's important not to aim for making the tricks longer just try and get as much fun out of them as possible and they will get longer automatically. But yes, Alikzam, it's very possible to fit 6 effects into 45 minutes, no stretching required. |

Hi Paul:
You have the beginnings of a nice program. The change bag, Afghan Bands, Square Circle, and Dove Pan are all winners. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do the cloth Afghan bands where they're ripped - that'll be terrific! I also recommend you skip the Foo Can, at least for shows inside someone's house. It sounds quite funny, but imagine getting water on someone's expensive wooden furniture or such. Plus, as magicgeorge mentioned, you'll get tired of the towels and wet head real quickly. Something to think about: What are you going to do with the pole once you produce it? 8 feet is pretty big in someone's house. Also, how are you going to pack it up? Sometimes, you have to pack up in the same room with the kids. The square circle would be a good ending routine. Maybe a 36 inch "Happy Birthday" silk could be the last thing produced. Those are my thoughts. You have some very good ideas - keep us in touch! Ron |

All this is truley helpful
The 8ft pole is a problem, so far when I have used I have just leaned it against the wall behind me or set it on the floor. If there is some way to make it small again I would love to know. I usually just carry it out with me, when the kids ask why I tell them that I have a shrinking machine in my car that I use to make it small again. These are also just the effects I'm currently working on the order for them. I will give the Foo Can I second thought for inside a house. Paul |

MagicGeorge makes a good point about the number of items in the act. A perfect comparison is when Letterman was out for his recent Shingles trouble; they always had more guests on when there were guest hosts, as the less experienced hosts might not be able to draw the guests out as much. In much the same way, someone who is not as experienced at performing might not be able to get as much (time and entertainment-wise) from each effect as those with years, or even decades of experience. As for the Foo Can, it is one I would delete in anyone elses home... One ruined floor or other item will cost you dearly. Maybe you can take a page from the clown world, and use a substitute, like the tinsel sold at great discounts at this time of year. JM

Once you work out the patter and presentation of your routines, you will then be able to decide how many you need to do.
You could bring all 10 w/ you, but it doesn't mean you need to do all 10, especially if you've reached your 45min. mark. I too, would skip the foo can... even w/ the towells, I wouldn't want someone making a mess in my house. re: the colouring book... make this an audience participation routine. it is always good to have one of these b/c not every kid will get on stage. I usually ask kids what kinds of things they'll see at a magic show/circus. I then have them think of those pictures, and if they use their imagination... they might see them on the pages. using their imaginary crayons from their pockets- we colour the pics while making a sound effect. using the imaginary eraser, we erase the pics using a sound effect. all is done and they give themselves a big round of applause. just my thoughts, j. |

I only use 4 routines in my 1-Hour show, These 10 tricks mentioned by Paul will gratually be whittled down as the routines for each evolve and get longer. As they get longer the weak ones will be removed until he finally ends up with a killer show.

I agree with Nick. I can easily do 50 mins on just 6 main routines in my show. The key word here is "routine". I never try and do my kids show to wow kids or amaze. I always try to entertain them through the use of comical magical theater. I routine my effects so that I can tell a story, get lots of audience interaction etc.
These effects are really great and will allow you to really bring out the presentation factor on all of them. Have fun with the kids and spend the time to develop the routines. Kyle

How long do most of your shows go? I personally thought that the longer the show the better, that way the parents have less time to worry about. I'm new to the kids magic, and all this help is realy realy appreciated.

It does depend on the average age of the kids your performing for by I have found that a 45-50 min show is usually ideal and has worked quite well for me. If the children are on the younger side, you may need to gear it more towards 30-35 mins.

Paul:
I am a new user and just came across your post. For Birthday parties I stick to a 30 minute show and do 30 minutes of balloon animals. That way I can charge more and give them an hour. I mainly do this for 4-8 year olds. I do 3 major "routines" but about 12 or more tricks or "effects" happen during the 30 minutes. I remember reading one of the old books on childrens shows and it said do not let more than 2 or 3 minutes go by without something happening. But this could be anything, from blowing a horn or any sight gag. (Or like I'm sure the Magicians above do, they have something they say or do to keep the kids interest.) During the show I do many eye-popping quick tricks and sleights. I try to make it colorful and amazing. I use the 8' pole in almost every show. It is very well worth the extra trouble from the reactions I get. Sometimes when I am packing up, I can step into the hall or next room and pack it up. This is usually when they are singing Happy Birthday. Once I packed it up in the bathroom at a country club, another time in an elevator at the Yacht club! If I can't, I carry it to my car. Paul, your tricks do sound good. I suggest getting all the David Ginn and Francis Marshall Kid books you can get your hands on. Also anything by Dick Oslund. Can I try your Foo can routine in one of my shows?? It sounds great. I do outdoor shows in the summer, and this would be a good way to cool down. Thanks, and always, HAVE FUN! ACE

A good list.
I too am putting together a kidshow for the first time. I've been a childrens' performer for 10 years now, but as a musician. My routine will also include the ever-present Colouring Book, as well as Dove Pan, Change Bag, 21st C. Silks, Dream Bags, Atomic Lightbulb, some TT work, and some puppetry. I'm working towards having all ready to go in the next couple of weeks. Have a great time with your routine! Cheers, Dali |

Hi Paul. I only have one suggestion, and that is to make sure that each effect is connected. For example.
Pull that 8' pole from the change bag, produce the silks used for the strength test from the change bag, vanish the silks along with the stuffed animal in your take apart box, etc. That way each effect flows in to the next. Just a suggestion. Good luck, and have fun! Cramer |
