I'm lying here in bed, after having the worst flu I've ever had for the past two weeks. Each time I thought it was gone, it came back the very next day with new symptoms. For two weekends I struggled through all my shows, not wanting to let anyone down. In seventeen years of performing, I have never had to pass on a show to a fellow entertainer due to illness or any another reason until yesterday.
Just when I thought it was finally over, I wake up to find I have lost my voice. The cough has come back also and the headache. I have never been ill like this before and were now in the third week and while I would still turn up to the party and do a silent show, I knew it would not be the best experience for the birthday child and made the ultimate decision to give the bookings to a couple of fellow entertainers. I don't know what hurts most at the moment, the illness or the money I just turned away! Has anyone else had to pass on work due to illness? Is there anything I should do once healthy for the clients? As anyone else had the flu this year and how long did it take you out? Steve P.s. Any secret home remedies for getting my voice back would also be appreciated! |

Not for me. I did reschedule a library show due to emergency with my wonderful wife. I made the call from the surgery centers waiting room.

I used to have a lot of problems with migraines. I almost never had to cancel, but it was very stressful having to be the life of the party when I was in such pain. I tried a million medicines and went to a nurologist, but that didn't work. I figured out the causes for most of the headaches and now I'm doing much much better. Everyone should get a flu shot - I had the flu a few weeks ago and so did my daughter. Luckily I didn't have to miss gigs or KAX.

Never missed a show due to the flu, but I certainly would not do a show if I had it. It's irresponsible to put others at risk, especially kids.
The only time I can remember that I missed a show due to illness is when my back went out and I was forced to go to the ER I was in such pain. The funny thing is, they had my lie down on a steel gurney for about 20 minutes while I waited for the doc, and by the time it somehow adjusted my back and the pain was gone! How embarrassing! |

I can relate to the back pain. I use to have it as a teenager and it left me crippled on the bathroom floor once, and took three days to subside. I once did a show while ill, that I had to get my dad to drive me to as I was too weak to even drive. I did the show drugged on painkillers and it went fine. As soon as the show finished though, I walked to the car and collapsed. My dad had to pack all my gear away and drive me home. I was in bed for at least three days, that's all I can remember.
Nothing has ever stopped me from doing a gig until this weekend. Not having a voice to talk to the children with was a major obstacle. I had a plan, but with all three shows being two-hours and 3-5 year olds (so they cant read), I knew there would be points when I was struggling too much to explain what we were going to do next. Which is when I decided to find someone else to take them on. If I hadent have found someone, I still would have done them, but they would not have been good shows, or at least not as good as what I know they should have been. The garlic idea is intresting. I want to try it but have no garlic and going out the house is a lot of work for me in my condition. The whisky idea ive heard before but ive also heard it only works with a horse throat (not completly gone) and will make the recovery time last longer. But if things don't improve soon, I may give it a try. Doctors in these parts have a ten day wait list for an appointment. Chances are it will have cleared itself by then. Still I will try and contact them on Monday and book an appointment by email. The bad news is Im pretty sure I caught the flu from them in the first place. A child at a party scratched me two months ago by mistake. It gave me a ringworm rash on my arm and I went to the doctors to get it treated. Sat across the room in the waiting room was someone who looked like he had the flu - that's when I think I got it. So I normally avoid doctors and hospitals whenever possible for this exact reason. |

Besides that, thousands of people die in hospitals every year! Obviously they are very unsafe places.

Tough break, Stephen. But don't beat yourself up over it. It rarely happens; twice in my case. Severe food poisoning once, death of a close relative in the other. If you replace yourself you may not have given the client what they booked, but you certainly did not let them down, and they will appreciate that.
Hope you recover speedily.

This is the main reason, I retired from children shows. One illness, knocked me down for three months and nearly killed me. Lost many shows. Thanks to members of my club they picked them up for me.
A simple flu hits me 10 times more than others and usually goes into pneumonia.
