I think you can get garlic tablets, Stephen.
Eating raw garlic may lose you more bookings than the flu! |

Dennis. Love and continued healing prayers.
I was able to spin all last week, though feeling sluggish during continued shoveling snow. Had to call in this morning to my school counseling gig, valentine gigs rehearsal and yes even tonight's spin /cycling class. Harris

I think the trouble starts when people fail to appreciate (or care) that the Café thrives on good relationships. We are all in relationship with one another and a good relationship requires good communication.
Some sure-fire relationship killers are contempt and sarcasm. Also, the need to be right versus a willingness to accept other people where they are. Maybe if we're more aware of these relationship killers, we can refrain from engaging in them and create a better environment and resource for everyone. |

Rob. Your post reminds me of my groups at school. Thanks for caring enough to post.
Besides online I find solace with my family, friends and accountability folks. Working these days in preparation for a valentine gig with a group of actors, singers and musicians. ....and of course Nigel.

I can relate. I came down with worst case of the flu down for about the same time. I felt terrible! Still do. Today is the first day that I felt like eating. Hope you get better.

Yeah, I haven't eaten properly in weeks. What's worst is that Im not looking any thinner either!
But not having my voice is effecting not just me, but other people as well, including work. I have clients who have left messages on the answering machine who want to book, but I cant call them back to take the booking. Im doing what I can. I ate a raw garlic sandwich this morning, had a couple of day-nurse and exposing myself to sunlight as much as I can here in rainy England. I haven't talked in days and avoid going out as to avoid the temptation to talk. But my next big show is Thursday and while the client booked me knowing about the situation and giving me an 'out', I still need the money. Especially after passing on three gigs this last weekend. This flu though just keeps on coming back with new symptoms each time. Today it returned with congestion of the nose. that's a new one for today. This is the third week since the first symptoms started. Im moaning now because I cant do much else. But its nice to know I'm not alone in my suffering! |

You've had to cancel 3 shows in 3 weeks ? Glad to see your bookings have increased. Plus you can't talk ? Phew !! relief for all of us. Plus, exposing yourself to some Day Nurse, has she stopped laughing yet ?
Seriously though, hope you get better soon and fit for Blackpool. Stuart.

My wife and I , along with my two kids, have been getting the flu shot every year for the past six years. So far we haven't had the flu. Schools scare me because of all the colds etc. and the close quarters of the school conditions.

The first two weekends I just worked on through the pain. It was only this last weekend when I had no voice that I had to pass on the three shows.

One must put reality in the right frame of mind.
When you are 67+ and based on statistics, 80 is a reach for me, I have approximately 12 years of life left. How many of them will be viable is an unknown variable. Do I need to work to for money? NO. Is my wife taken "care of" when I'm gone? YES Do I have permanent medical issues from Agent Orange? Yes. So the question becomes one of how to spend the rest of one's life. I could do magic shows. I could travel with my wife. I could dwell on problematic issues. Well, trips to Aruba, Mexico, Las Vegas, New Orleans' Mardi Gras, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, DC, NC. SC, Poconos, PA, visit with grand kids, are trips that I already have done in the last year+. This is the the way I want to spend the next "How many years", all with my best buddy, my wife. Two weeks ago, my younger brother lost his best buddy, his wife. What does he remember? He has never been out of NJ with her. Far to many people work until they die. Planning is very beneficial, so do it as young as possible because a simple flu can kill the elderly. May life give you lots of happiness, laughter, and enjoyment with those who are meaningful to your life. My father died and never knew this. I look at a dollar bill and realize it isn't paper, but cloth with fancy printing on it and you can't take it with you. It buys/pays for "stuff". Reevaluate, and make the best decisions you can make now before it's to late. Dennis PS.. I got to figure a way to get rid of lots of "Stuff".

Im hoping that by the time I'm your age, they will have found a cure for ageing and I can live forever! At the moment though, Ill be happy with a cure for the flu and laryngitis.
I agree that we should all do this job until we have enough money saved away so that we can retire. I don't care if that means retiring at 60, 50 or 40. We only live once and if we work hard at out profession and save wisely, then were allowed to enjoy it, and its better to enjoy it earlier than later. My five year plan when I bought my house was to have it paid off in five years and then to take the rest of my life at ease. Its going to take longer than five years but I still believe in the plan. Were lucky that were in a profession that should we retire early, and then decide we need to do the odd show now and again to pay for a holiday, we can do that. |

Thanks for the update Rick. I had read it in the other section, glad it was wrong.
About the flu: I'm just now getting over it myself. It lasted about three weeks with me. I had a real case of it. I never get the flu shot, but I will from now on. Tom

Also good if it is passive income through rentals. On aging, I find the present way the government is doing business is very alarming. It doesn't seem it's getting any better. The music of the times is also disturbing, hence, I feel the effects of aging. I recall my parents and grandparents, and great grandparents. Times change, and I don't know if I can change fast enough with it. Living forever, has not been an appeal for me. Enjoying the NOW is so much better.
