That's unreal. It's crazy how smart those birds are. During the summer at a swimming pool I work at, I've seen them work together to get the lids off of garbage cans. They also somehow carry day old bagels from a shop about a block away that throws them out, and drop them in a shallow gutter of one the pools in order to soften them up enough to eat them.

Very often they will pick up nuts, etc. from the ground and then fly up to a wire crossing an intersection, where they will drop them on the road in front of cars stopped for the traffic light. The light turns green, the cars ride over the nuts, cracking them, and then the crows swoop down to pick up the contents.

I venture there is a fair amount of deception going on about the birds familiarity with the objects.
I know someone who is a birder. He says crows engage in no frivolous activity. Every action they take is to achieve a meal. And yet still I agree. Smarter than some humans I know. |

I'd like to see an unedited run of the process. I don't doubt the intelligence, I'd like to see it presented uncut. Here's a pic I got recently:

Indeed. And the crow did the math. I understand why it's been edited. I'm patient, though, and would like to see it uncut. Presented as is, I think, opens the door for the skeptics, as noted above. Here's a nice clip I found on YouTube: http://youtu.be/Zo3RWq6dNl0

I often see crows doing the "dropping a nut off the wire" trick. Also, in the summers I put out plastic containers in my back yard and fill them with water. The mom and dad crows bring their young offspring along, leave them in the yard, then fly away and come back with pieces of bread, which they soak in the water before feeding to the little ones. Sometimes these crows will see me somewhere down the street, and I could almost swear they are talking to me. And then there's this:

Yes, I found a similar article regarding pigeons and others, not too long ago. Scientists catching up, maybe?

Thinking like a magician, you know.
"Using tools to act on non-food objects – for example, to make or retrieve other tools – is considered to be a hallmark of human intelligence, and may have been a crucial step in our evolution. One form of this behaviour, ‘sequential tool use,’ has been observed in a number of non-human primates, and has recently been reported for New Caledonian crows by a research team from Auckland University, New Zealand." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/200......4114.htm http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/201......5504.htm Rooks: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/200......3540.htm |

Thanks for those links, Laurie. I knew that you would know a lot about these guys.
There are a lot of them by my house and they all seem to know me. (Probably because I feed them.) One even occasionally walks down the street next to me when I go to the store, jabbering the whole way. I guess he's trying to tell me what food to buy. |

LOL
Never had much to do with crows, but I did raise doves for many years. I really enjoyed feeding and being around them. Tom
