Just saw a new apparatus effect on Larry Barnowsky's website called The Rings of Alexandria. After reading the description I have no idea how it could be done but knowing Dr. Barnowsky's expertise in mathematics it seems a good bet that he found a new principle to baffle us with. It's a limited edition that will be available according to the website Feb 14.

This effect looks impossible. I just ordered it. Will post a review on the trick forum after I get it and perform it. I like that the effect is being sold in a limited run of no more than 36 numbered copies.

Thanks Paul for those comments and the order.
When you first get the effect, perform it for yourself without looking at the explanation in the Discussion section. I think you will be amazed how the device figures out how many cards are in the spectator's pocket. Then read the explanation. Larry |

This looks good but seems more like a formal type effect.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

It won't fit in your pocket but at least you don't need drapes and a tuxedo
Seriously, I've performed this in various venues and it truly falls into the category of packs small, plays big. Hands on audience participation, absorbing story, and a mystical looking prop combine to produce a unique and entertaining magical experience. You can order this directly from my website or very soon from Stevens Magic Emporium exclusively. Larry |

Just arrived yesterday. The apparatus is beautifully crafted and all props are included. I like the provided carrying case which holds everything and looks magical too. 10 pages of instuctions with color photos in the same format as Larry's books. I tried this out on myself giving the provided deck a riffle shuffle and acting as both spectators and placing an unknown (to me) number of cards in my pocket. Divided the cards into the four piles so each spectator has equal cards. Dealt the piles as described into 3 and 5 even piles with some leftovers. Counted the rings from left to right on the apparatus and engraved on the next ring was the number 20. I counted the cards in my pocket and there were 20. The total of the values of the cards was also predicted as 60 which was correct. Unbelievable. Fooled the heck out of me. Just started to read the math theory behind this in the instuctions and the methodology is something I never heard of and I did have some college math. A winner.

It's a great effect ! I reframed it with a Da Vinci Code patter and 2 special decks of cards ("Da Vinci Code" and "Da Vinci" decks) with the use of a memorized deck. When I'm turned and they say the number on the ring I quickly turn the thought of card over (deck hidden on me, 'fake' in the box seen but not touched at the beginning when the rest of the materials are put out), then while they're counting I put this 'second' deck seemingly out of the box and leave it in front of them. So there are 3 reveals : the number on the ring, which happens also to be the number of cards they count before falling on a reversed one, and this one turns out to be their 'thought of card' from the beginning of the effect !
Crazy stuff ! I hope it's clear enough... Obviously you have to buy this to figure it out. Larry provides you with a lot of variations and materials so you can choose whatever you like or adapt it. The memdeck is only one of those variations, you don't need it, there are easier ways and perhaps much better also but I didn't test those for now. As it is it's really great, easy, baffling and a different mystery than the usual stuff. Thanks Larry for the serious customer service, the superb instructions, and great delivery and materials !

Mimo,
That a great application of the effect. You don't need a mem deck to do any of 4 variations I provide. I do have one version where you can employ a mem deck. In that case the number of cards in the pocket is predicted correctly by the ring device and you announce the name of a card that they looked out seemingly randomly after cutting the cards and dealing them in four piles. I also explain how to the mem deck effect using a stack of 13 cards that are in numerical order three cards apart. In that case no memory work is needed, just be able to count So far 20 units sold. Three words. This is amazing.
The apparatus supplied is beautifully made. It works perfectly as in the instructions. Variation 1 is my favorite because not only does the apparatus tell the spectator how many cards are in his pocket but you tell them the sum of those card values. I also tried it with the supplied play bills and works great, To do this with real bills would require $468 in money but I am tempted to try that. The other variations are quite novel. I think a book could be written about this math principle since it can be applied to things other than cards. Since this is a limited run you may want to get this before it sells out. I think collectors will want this very unique piece of apparatus. Totally satisfied with this purchase. David |

I hope the book comes out soon. I can see how this principle can be deceptively used in many types of magical effects with spectator participation.
