Drew, I didn't read all the comments, but you've only partially "hit the nail on the head" because magic isn't about effects no matter what the source. You can learn only stand alone effects and build an act around them. You can also learn from books, DVD, etc. It doesn't matter what the source of an effect is because magic is about presentation and not effects by themselves. I been into magic since I was 7 and I'm 53. But before I became interested in magic, particularly before I got any good at it, I learned to tell stories and jokes--which are short stories with funny endings--and that has helped me more than anything. Every student I've had I've told to learn how to tell a good joke, and not just repeat one they've heard, but to make each joke they learn their own. Not that every magic routine needs to have a joke as part of the presentation, but you get my point.
The other thing that is difficult for a beginner to grasp is that regardless of what effects they want to learn they need to perfect each one. Part of that perfection process is making the effect their own, kind of like making a joke one's own. That means not just memorizing the patter that came with the instructions or what the author wrote in the book, but developing an individual presentation. REally, the person for whom that "canned" patter works if the guy who wrote it. It's very rare that using another magician's patter will work for anyone who tries it. If it works out over a period of time and you go back and compare it to what you are asying once the effect is really yours you will be surprised to see how much it has changed in the process without your even realizing it. Yes, learn from books, or DVD, or a mentor, or buy buying as many stand alone effects as you want, but make the presentation your own. Before you know it you will have something that can't be taken away or copied because it is truly unique.
