Not me. I admit I had to look it up as I didn't know who Johnny Quinn was. The reference was lost on me as I don't follow sports. Heck, I didn't even bother to go to the Seahawks Victory parade last week and it passed less than a block from my building.

Reading the story the obvious joke would be a "Here's Johnny!" one.

To bad Houdini wasn't on the bob sled team when he got locked into that phone booth.

Topical like all humor has its place and time.

Having never heard of Johnny Quinn, the answer is no.

I hate to generalise, especially along sexist lines. But if we assume that 70% of women have no real interest in sport, and 30% of men have no interest, that means that half the population couldn't care less about whatever sports event is going on at the moment. I am of that half of the population, and use the sports pages for mopping up spills, etc.

Thank god for **** poor construction or he would still be stuck in that bathroom. I wonder if they are going to bill him for the whole in the wall.

He's not well known enough. If it was OJ Simpson right after the arrest it's one thing. A relatively unknown amateur athlete making the news for one day is another. Just my opinion.

Though I do watch sports I would not call myself a junkie.

I do watch a lot of news. And this story has shown up a few times.

I am guessing many of you knew about the phone booth-Houdini story.

On a more universal level, doing the standard reference during a 5 Ring routine.?
Or playing the Olympic theme on a kazoo or harmonica as part of a bit.
Appearing broom + Olympic theme song=Curling.

I know some of you are going to ask "CURLING"?

Curling is my favorite Olympic winter sport. I love the ridiculousness of it. I know, I know, they are athletes and they train hard and care about their sport... but it just seems like something I would make up as a gag sport.

More to the point, I almost never do topical humor. I have very few pop culture references at all in my act. The only one I can think of is a "Gilligan's Island" thing I do on the concertina. But I'm not using that as much anymore because a lot of times I'll look around the room full of parents in their twenties and thirties and their children and realize I'm probably the only one in the room who knows the "Gilligan's Island" theme song.

I did not know the Olympics had a theme song.

George's gag is funny but only for any adults who would have read the story about the giraffe in the Danish zoo being killed, skinned and fed to the lions.

Unless that story runs the gag has a lifespan of one month maximum.

This is really the wrong section for a thread on topical humour as any such references will be way over the heads of the children. But it is certainly worth pursuing in a different sestina.

Yes, I don't think I'd do that joke at a kids show unless I was in a particularly wicked mood.

When I posted that I had just tried it at a comedy club. It got a laugh and a bit of an awww.

But yes a month is probably pushing it, luckily Justin Bieber is bound to have done something mind-staggeringly stupid again by then.

I do mostly family not strictly kid parties.
Yes I do topical and pop culture references both through words and musical instruments.

An example of the former came a day after the fake sign language interpreter in South Africa broke.
I may have posted it here or the funnier section.

Another story didn't 't get the laugh I expected.
I then made some ASL gestures. And said perhaps it would be funnier in sign language.

Don 't think it would raise a corner if a smile today. At the time it got a good laugh.
Perhaps it was the bit, the timing or my body / facial work.

Comedy is wonderful both in it 's creation through writes and re-writes. Or spontaneous offerings.
