His wife, Rachel, had some sad news to report today. It seems Aldo Columbini has suffered a massive stroke and has been moved to a hospice. He is unable to speak and his right side is paralyzed. He has been taken off of life support and isn't expected to live more than another 48 hours. I'm so very sad to hear this.

I remember meeting Aldo for the first time back in the late 1980's at a convention in St. Louis when I was brand new to magic. He saw me standing awkwardly by his dealer table. He smiled and spent some time with me. He asked me about my shows...my visions for my "entertainments" and he listened to my responses like they actually mattered to him.

He noticed that I was new, feeling uncomfortable -- and he took time to validate me. That was a genuine and selfless act of kindness. He wasn't interested in selling me stuff...he just wanted to take a little time to build up someone new to the craft. It's the mark of a gentleman.

I had no idea who he was then. But I DO remember that I left that time with him feeling more confident with the first few inklings that I might actually have a place in the world of magic.

When I saw him at the main stage performance, I felt just a little sheepish -- but prouder still.

I'm so sorry to hear this news. But I am blessed that our lives had intersected even for those few minutes. He is a gracious, brilliant and kind man.

Sorry to hear it, David. I'm hopeful for something good to come out of this. Thanks for telling us.

How sad to hear. He was always so enthused about magic and had that wonderful creativity that so few of us have. You knew magic just swirled around his brain. His output was amazing. It was a privilegs for me to be associated with him just a little bit. The magic field will suffer a loss.

His work will endure for a long time, Via Con Dios, Aldo, you done good.

Aldo lectured at the first magic convention I attended (NYCAN, 1998).

I remember him opening by declaring: "Magic is simple. Magicians try to complicate magic, but magic is simple."

I'll miss his presence.

I first met Aldo back in the 70's and performed on the same bill with him many times. He is a great guy and I'm very saddened by this.

Just received some very sad news. My dear friend and mentor in magic, Aldo Colombini has had a massive stroke and is not expected to live. Here is the statement from his wife Rachel:

"Aldo has suffered a catastrophic stroke. Sunday afternoon paramedics rushed him to Munro Regional Hospital in Ocala. Today they performed another CAT Scan and I am saddened to say that the news is not good. Aldo is completely paralyzed on his right side. He cannot speak and the doctors say there is nothing else that can be done. Aldo loved life and does not want to be on life support. I am heartbroken by the fact that I must now take him off life-support and move him to Hospice Care. Short of a miracle, the doctors say he has less than two weeks. Please pray for him.

Aldo is a magical comedian and that is how he would want to be remembered. I get strength from knowing that Aldo and I have made so many loving friends throughout the world. We had a marvelous life together traveling the world performing and lecturing to thousands of people in dozens of countries." - Rachel Colombini

Aldo was the first "name" in the magic community to take an interest in me and recognize my potential. In the mid 90s when he was living in the LA area, I went down for a couple of weeks to take lessons from him. Not only would he not accept my money, but he gave me one of each of every book, trick, and video he had produced--and Aldo was a VERY prolific creator, so I had quite a collection. He wrote the forward to my "Great Scott! It's Magic!" book trilogy, and he came to visit and lecture in my home multiple times. He introduced me to many other "names" in magic and helped me get my foot in the door lecturing at magic clubs and conventions.

Aldo is not perfect by any means (which of us is?) but he was gregarious and friendly, and not just to the famous. Every time I visited the Magic Castle in Hollywood with him, Aldo would greet every hostess, bartender, and waiter by name with the same enthusiasm as he did the big-name magicians. The staff at the Castle lit up when they saw him coming. He was a friend, teacher, and mentor to me, a guy from Idaho who was a total unknown in the magic community. I love him, and I will miss him terribly.

I would GREATLY appreciate your prayers for Aldo and Rachel.

I am shocked and saddened by this news! I didn't know Aldo personally, but I would occasionally order items from his website. Just a few short days ago we had some email exchanges and I always got the feeling I was dealing with a friend, rather than a mere business acquaintance. My very best wishes to Aldo and Rachel.
