In certain corners, magic is crumbling in a new way... the "lads" find it hilarious, a bit of blue for the boys, "in the right circumstances - this is HILARIOUS!"...
I think its just another notch on the bedpost of the virus that is slowly destroying magic and mentalism... terrible metaphor...anyway... there has always been the kind of magician who might make crude jokes in front ladies during performances, they might even try and use magic and mentalism to try and get women to like them... but then I also see books on how to use magic to get la1d...genuinely released material on how to meet women, how to use magic to get them into bed... what are we saying to the shy and inept? what lessons are we really allowing to be taught? is it manipulation? don't you think magic and mentalism suffers enough already with cheesy and salacious characters? where's the class? where's the pride in being a magician or mentalist? recently, I have seen a few products "out there" that have made me shiver... "comedy gags" of rohypnol pills, a nun that is a phallus on the opposite side... like some kind of badly constructed Carry On film... do we really want to encourage that kind of thing? do we want teenage kids buying and performing it? do we consider how it might affect others? maybe its just me... I've performed for groups of 'lads' many times, its far more fun to point out who is the ring-leader, who gets the most girls, who always falls into the "friend" category, there are bar bets, there is OOTW as a group experience, there are nick name games, and drawings to be duped...there are a million (well ok, maybe not that many) of things you could do OTHER than going for the obvious, the tawdry and the out and out 70s english Comedian style gags... haven't we moved on? isn't it embarrassing? shouldn't we be focusing on being a class act? I've got a fair few old magic books, I don't remember Al Koran suggesting that if all else fails, put on a pair of comedy breasts and blow a raspberry... 21st century? blimey... what hope have we? "oh iain, pull your trousers up will you? its just a bit of fun! you'd get GREAT reactions from these items FOR THE RIGHT AUDIENCE!" massive get out clause in my view, and certain does nothing but gets a momentary "oi! oi!" of excitement from a group of young lads that will forget all about it within 24 hours... pardon me for the mild rant, but c'mon now...

I think Max Maven summed it up best:
"To become a good magician you have to overcome why you became a magician in the first place."

Bless you - but no, I think I'm worth about 10p on the current market...
I am especially concerned with the rohypnol pill/bottle "joke"...what are we saying with that? don't get me wrong, off-colour humour can be fantastic - doug stanhope is one of my favourite stand-ups of modern day, but for a magic or mentalism performance, I do not think it is a healthy thing...

As I was watching Don't Trust Andrew Mayne, I found myself consistently put off by "off-color" comments made at the expense of young women. I'm by no means a prude but the ones I mean seemed gratuitous and crossing a line.

I find Andrew Mayne's show to be offensive.
The show should be called, "When Magic Attacks!" WHAT are they THINKING?! His character is NOT "cool" -- it's nothing but mean spirited trickery. He comes across as little more than a smug, world class ass. Sorry, but nobody likes to be assaulted with magic. This type of performance is exactly why so many people run the other way when they see a "magician" approaching. I doubt the show has a chance. Sooooo sad. Even sadder that he is so clueless. |

Well said Iain. I recently saw a performer place a sponge ball in a young womans hand and ask her to rapidly moveher hand up and down... kind of like she was using a shake weight if you know what I mean. After a few moments of this and laughter from her friends she was told to open her fist and instead of a sponge ball there was a rather R rated novelty item in her hand. I thought that killed any sort of magic that was going on and just went for a cheap, crass gag.

Look, you can use magic for couple counselling...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1p0DOvZpgo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQZf8oCWZ1w I dunno - the Andrew I know and have had occasional correspondence with is nothing like this character on these episodes.... he seemed like a nice guy off camera... I don't get it.

Perhaps its the audience that has changed?

Don't knock the material. Knock the performer and his ability to choose / execute it. There has and always will be bad performers. But there have been brilliant performers who can make what seems tasteless in the act of others work for them. If a character is well developed and the "tasteless" material is appropriate for him and he executes it well, he should be applauded not criticized.

Sure, if it's done well. I don't think there is ever a situation where asking a young lady to mime sexual activities and turning a sponge ball into a self pleasure device would be considered magic done well though. And trust me, I am no prude, I just think magic should be treated with respect. But if you can't do that, you should at least respect your participants. Sadly, that seems to be becoming a less and less popular train of thought.

I absolutely can not put blame on "today's audiences".
Although I'm sure Andrew is going after a specific juvenile demographic, I do NOT believe that anybody will ever succeed by playing that far down to an audience. Frankly, it is boring. Really, really boring. If he had any kind of fresh or smart sense of humor about it, it may be able to work. However this show is lifelesss. It's like watching really bad acting. It leaves you annoyed and un-affected. People of all demographis will respond positively to quality, not pandering. |

Andrew has a history. He had some of the earlier magic radio shows. He did a Harry Potter convention with his Wizard School DVD and had a very bad experience. I haven't seen the new show but maybe that is why he has a problem with women.

If he wanted to do "Punked", then he should have done that. Instead it just looks like a faked "trickster" character that is completely lacking any charm or charisma and attacking people.
If you want to know what is wrong with magic, watch the video links above. I know -- let's levitate a phone booth. Wait... when's the last time you actually saw a phone booth? Oye. Candid Camera was more magical. At least it had a sense of humor. |
