Hi
I'm going stir crazy from not being able to play any golf this winter. I live in PA. and we've been getting hammered with snow storms. I usually play golf all year, but the ground has been covered most of the winter with snow. That's why I'm breaking out the video games. I'm not much of a gamer but I still enjoy playing every once in awhile. I have a Wii and the best game I ever played on this system was "Resident Evil 4". This was also the best game I ever played! I'm tempted to replay it, but I'd like to try something new. Can any owners of the Wii platform, recommend any other games worth a try. Thanks P.S Golf and trout fishing are right around the corner !

I used to be a pretty hardcore gamer but since leaving the industry I've definitely switched to the 'casual' gamer side.
I would say that if you consider "Resident Evil 4" the best game you've played, you're probably on the wrong platform. That style of game is definitely the exception on the Wii. You would probably be much happier with a Playstation or XBox if that is the type of game you like. Having said that, you have the Wii and if you don't want to switch, I would recommend Metroid Prime 3 or Super Mario Galaxy. Here's a list of the top 25 Wii games according to IGN. http://www.ign.com/articles/2011/08/16/the-top-25-wii-games Personally, I may break down and get me the PS4 once Infamous: Second Son releases. Until then, I don't see a reason to get the new PS4 yet. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/02/12/i......he-drama |

Hi rockwall
I think you're right about me having the wrong platform. I bought the Wii originally to get some exercise while playing. To be honest I'd rather have a normal controller. I was looking at the PS4 but after getting sticker shock that thought vanished. I might get a PS3 since the games are pretty cheap compared to PS4 games. I just picked up Dead Space Extension used for 10.00. It's a rail game not my favorite but I just need something to get me through the winter. Thanks for the recommendations .

How good's your computer? If old school is your cup of tea, there's a ton of emulators out there for all sorts of games.

PS3 would be better than the PS4 at this point I think. The price is pretty good and there are a LOT of really good titles on it. Unless there's a game you REALLY want, (and there's not a big list for the PS4 yet), I'd definitely go with the PS3 at this point.
I really liked Infamous and Infamous 2 on it but there are a lot more games that are probably even better. The Last of Us Grand Theft Auto V Assassin's Creed IV God of War series Uncharted series etc. |

My wife and I have an Xbox 360 and I use it to play Kinect Sports occassionally. That's boatloads of fun bowling or playing soccer or baseball. Another great game is Skyrim. I haven't played it much here recently, but it's definately a lot of fun a great game with hours upon hours of play. It's pretty addictive. But, I have to stay focused on other things as well and not get too caught up in video games. Still, I really enjoy playing a video game though! I will always be a gamer!
My wife and I will probably eventually get a PS4. Better gaming console than the Xbox One but right now, not much game titles on the PS4 and the Xbox One has a few game titles but really not much to choose from either. They will eventually stop making games for the 360 and PS3 so, eventually my wife and I will probably get a PS4 given that the GPU performance of the PS4 is better than Xbox One's.

I'm old school, I play on my PC. Since reading a thread here at the Café I got hooked on "Civilization".

Is there a certain time of year or holiday that the PS3 goes on sale ? I just picked up some Wii games pretty cheap so I'm in no real hurry to buy one.
Thanks to everyone who replied!

I have all three major systems from last generation (360, PS3, Wii) and have played them all extensively, so I know what kind of games are good, which ones I like, etc.
I would strongly recommend picking up a cheap PS3. For me, that is the overall best system out of those three. And if you can get a PS2 compatible system, that just expands your gaming options. Remember, some games (like Infamous or Halo) are console-specific, so keep that in mind, too. It really just depends on what you like. For me, I enjoy playing games with my little brother. I also enjoy exploring big worlds and crafting my own experience. So naturally, I like to play games such as Minecraft, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed, GTA, Call of Duty, Resistance, etc. |

If I allowed myself to go all in with video games I would never get anything else done. I only allow myself one series of games and will not play anything else. That series of games is Half Life:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_%28series%29 Fortunately it takes them years to roll out new chapters so I can have a life in the interim. Not for the wii platform unfortunately. I play it on my PC, Linux O/S even... On my wii I enjoyed the sports CD, primarily tennis. I primarily used my wii to watch Netflix and Hulu using their plugins. Highly recommend that as well. (Edit) Now that I am pulling up my system to play, I realize I also play Portal. Not the Half Life Series but a great game by the same developers. |

If your computer's good enough, you might want to consider valve.com. Valve is run by Steam and a lot of their games; Portal, Portal 2, Half-life and Half-life 2. But there are other games as well.

I have played the Diablo games since the very first version and am still playing D3. Trying to get my first hardcore character (toon) to the top (60) level, am at lvl 56 now and almost there! I have regular characters of every class at lvl 60 and am waiting for the first D3 expansion pack due end of next month "Reaper Of Souls". I don't play a big variety of games (never have) but tend to stick to a few that I enjoy and rotate between them. I still have an active WoW account but am not playing it at the moment. Any D3 gamers out there, let me know! I don't play a lot but it's what I do when at home and not in mood for tv.

After digging out from another snow storm today my daughter and I played this game. We both played together and it was a lot of fun ! Check it out if you don't have anything better to do. It's kinda long so just advance the video a little to get an idea of the game. It's not my typical video game, but I wanted to play something my daughter would enjoy too.

What I like about Fallout 3 is like it illustrates in an entertaining way what a world would be like in the aftermath of a massive nuclear exchange. The introductory music is pretty good too!

PC gaming is my choice because games are deeper, more customizable, and, especially from indie developers tend to be far more innovative. There are still certain genre limitations to consoles. Grand strategy games like the Civilization series are non-existent, RPGs tend to be RPG "light" and frequently very dumbed down.
If you have a PC, there are a couple of games being released this year I would HIGHLY recommend plus another that is on Kickstarter right now that really deserves to be released. None of these games would ever be viable for a console - even the "next-gen" ones which are for all intents and purposes, really specialized PCs. 1. Limit Theory: Due for a mid 2014 release, Limit Theory is a space game, but like nothing you have ever played before. It is being developed by two guys at Stanford. The playing area is a procedurally generated universe - in fact, everything in the game is procedurally generated and it looks breathtaking. The universe in this game, unlike our own real universe IS infinite. Want to command a flagship? Go for it. Fancy yourself more of a dogfighter? You can do that as as well. In fact, the degree of freedom in this game even puts The Elder Scrolls series to shame. The UI looks like something out of a 25th century Star Trek and is so intuitive it almost feels organic. 2. Age of Wonders III: The Age of Wonders series is one of the great high fantasy strategy series ever to grace the PC. It's been ten years since the last installment - Shadow Magic - was released. (You can still purchase the series for 5.99 a pop at GOG.com). Age of Wonders III however now allows command of whole armies on the screen and the world is far more expansive than even Peter Jackson's vision of Middle Earth. It is not a twitch game; it's more like Civilization but unlike Civilization where grand strategy is the focus, in this game, both grand strategy and tactics on the battlefield are necessary. Lastly, this next game will appeal to boardgamers and electronic gamers alike. It is called Dungeonforge. Imagine being able to create complete games and share them with the rest of the world. Imagine being able to jump in and be the DM and play interactively. Imagine a solo game experience that exceeds hundreds of hours. Also, imagine a game where you create ALL of the assets and all with a very easy to understand UI! Oh yeah, I did say this would appeal to boardgamers as well. Dungeonforge allows you print the maps you've created and use them in a staggering number of traditional boardgame/pen and paper systems. The game pays homage to Bioware's great Neverwinter Nights series - (also available on GOG for 90% off this weekend, then head on over to Neverwinter Vault and find literally tens of thousands of modules to download for free). But Dungeonforge takes the basic foundation of NWN/NWN2 and ramps it up exponentially. Check out Kickstarter for more info. The backing tiers on this are extremely reasonable and all levels get access to alpha and beta builds plus the final game. Wanted to mention as well to Skyrim and Fallout 3 players that if you are playing these on consoles, you are missing out on so very much. Anyhow, I love gaming and it's a blast to take a break from talks of Elmsley counts and insipid dross questions like :What's the best book on [insert magic topic here]. And if anyone here plays Magic: The Gathering, if you want to play with every card ever made against the computer or a buddy for FREE, PM me for three fantastic programs that give you the cool M:TG experience but without the horrific money sink! Game on! Vlad |

Lately, with my wife's schedule, I have to take care of my kid more and have less time for gaming; I do play with him on our Wii U- lots of Super Mario 3d World and such, but he's not quite even 5 yet, so his skills make it... a little frustrating if I'm trying to pass levels and get stars. Apart from that, what I mostly have time for is little app games on my iPad and Facebook. The gameplay is pretty simple, but it passes time.
If you're interested in Monster Legends or Dragon City, let me know- I need more online friends to expand my territories and get stuff Anyway, all of them are a far cry fro Dwarf Fortress and Aurora, two games I used to play that could be considered "autastic", if you catch my meaning...

I'm going to look into a PS3. I didn't realize there was so many different models of PS3's. From what I've read, stay away from the Ps3 12gb. It only has enough memory for two games. I should probably wait until next winter since spring is right around the corner. Once golf and trout season is here, I won't be spending too much time indoors. Then again, if I see a great deal this Presidents day on a PS3, maybe I'll pick one up.
PS Anyone ever play Zelda when it first game out. What a great game it was.
