Hey everyone!
A couple of thoughts. I have so much magic in my apartment (dvds, books and tricks) and it's really hard to stay focused on what I should practice. I love practicing and I do practice quite a bit, but I think it's hard to know how many things I should practice "at once" I feel that one thing is a little to little, especially if it's a card sleight. What do you guys think and how do you do it? Do you read a whole book? Do you practice all the tricks in a book at least a couple of times? Do you read through the whole thing and then go back and choose what effects you actually would like to practice? (Dvds/books) Thank you for your time and thoughts on the matter |

I keep several "toys" around my easy chair and a "toy box" filled to capacity under my side table.
Right now Ninja Rings, Ring and Ribbon, Rope (through arm), Ring and Rope and a deck of cards (just flourishes, jog shuffles and DLs lately) are there, ready to pick up upon inspiration or a commercial break. Practicing so many things at the same time does slow progress in any one but keeps it fun and varietal. You may notice some are very different and some are similar (like Ring & Rope and Ring & Ribbon) there are advantages to that. My partner Tom practices Guitar nightly and that time is golden for practice. The music is wonderful and one set of practice informs the others. I practice what interests me at the moment so I would never go through a whole book and do everything. Sometimes I will practice while watching a favorite old movie, especially false shuffles and the like where muscle memory and a casual look are helpful. My approach is great for exploring and learning parts of things but real practice for a whole effect will involve more focus and commitment of longer practice times for a while. While finalizing a routine I may drop down to two things for a week or so. Mostly you should choose a practice regimen that feels right to you. How do you approach your other hobbies? -Mary Mowder |

I can’t imagine going through a book or DVD and practicing every single trick. It works for me to go through and pick out one or two items that fit my personality, practice those thoroughly, and then try them out on friends or magic buddies. If they are a hit, I’ll put them in my notebook. Once they’re in there, I randomly pick out tricks to practice in between working on new stuff because if you let them lie fallow for several months you’ll forget the sequence or key points. But remember, the object is not to have a giant repertoire; it’s to have a tight, routined, act with material you know inside and out. Work stronger effects into your act over time and weed out the so-so ones.
Oh yeah, and always have a deck of cards with you. You can practice with those anywhere. ~Jon |

When I read my books, I start to look for some interesting title, then I start reading that tricks to see is that really caught my attention, then I start practicing the specific trick, and if I find out some sleights involved in this trick that I am not familiar with, then I track down to the sleights(probably card college or RRTCM), and practice those sleights.

I am very new to magic myself. I am reading through two books and working on shuffles and simple tricks and slights to help build my confidence. I have read through each book all the way through marking any tricks that fit what I am wanting to work on and do. I go back and reread those sections and break down the tricks and slights peace by peace and go slowly. I like knowing how the trick breaks down and fits together. Really understand how one thing flows to another and what parts make the whole of the trick or slight. It lets me enjoy the full complexity of the trick and know where I need more work in what part.
Like I said I am very new at this and I am sure my methods will change but for now that's what I got. |

I'm always have some cards around for playing but when it comes to systematic training, why not apply the technique used to learn vocabulary: Make some cards on which you write a sleight, effect or any other thing you might need to exercise. Then classify the cards in a cardbox into categories: every day, every week, every second week, every month, once a year.
All you have to do is to repeat the exercises in the box "every day" each day until you master them, then you move the cards you are satisfied with up into "every week". Once a week you do the ones in "every week". If there is the slightest hesitation in one of them, you move this card back to daily, if not, you move it up in the chain and so on with the different categories. It makes sure you exercise everything at one moment, but more often things you just started or lost precision. |
