The JES cups were made by a medical student who wanted a good copy of the Paul Fox cups. He apparently doesn't have a lot of time to devote to making cups, and his marketing practices leave a lot to be desired. One dealer who was offered a distributorship explained that he hadn't actually worked a discount into the price of them.
I e-mailed the fellow who makes them a couple of months ago to purchase a set and never heard from him. I mentioned this to the dealer that I have referenced in the above paragraph, and that's when I learned about this situation. I won a set on eBay last week, so I will know more about them first hand. Evidently, they are about the same size as a Paul Fox cup, but much heavier. As soon as I have them in my hot, grubby forepaws, I'll photograph them and put them into the cups and balls museum.

The photos of the JES cups are up on my web site now.
They weigh right at 4 oz. each which is the same as the Penguin cups. The Paul Fox cups weigh about 2.5 oz. each. There is an interesting anomaly with the Magic Makers Collector's Cups that nobody seems to have picked up on. On their web site, and in ads that various people put on eBay, the height is given as 4". That is not true. They are 2 3/4" tall.

I own a set of Johnson cups. Great cups!
I just purchased a used set of Paul Fox cups made by Jeff Busby and an old set of P and L cups. Does anyone have info on the Busby Paul Fox cups? Good, Bad ? |

Yes. No one is allowed to own Busby cups. You must surrender them immediately to their rightful owner Jeff Busby. And you must never mention the name Paul Fox on the internet again.

For years I used a set of Danny Dew Paul Fox cups I got from Ken Brooke - lovely cups. (Copper)
Just recently, though, I've received a set of Pete Biro's "Johnny Paul" cups and I'm having great fun with these, working on a routine of my own. Nice cups - thanks Pete!! I am the only guy in the world who never much liked the Chop Cup??? Regards Riley |

Yes, you are the only person in the whole world who never liked the chop cup and you must be banished.
Seriously, different people like different things. I like my chop cup routine because it fits my style, and my audiences like it. The audience is the final judge. I have seen some really nice three cup routines that I also like. dlcmagic: Regarding the JB Paul Fox cups -- Jeff made spun cups first. They are not as finely crafted as the Danny Dew cups -- much heavier. Then he switched over to his CNC cups. If the ones you have are the ones from the Martinka auction, those are CNC cups. They have had mixed reviews from various people. I don't have a set of them yet. I'm trying to find a set now. I would have bid on those at the Martinka auction, but, as luck would have it, I was on the road at the time the auction was to end, so I took myself out of the running. Jeff evidently lost the programming for those cups, so they will not be made again. James Riser has posted some thoughts about these cups on his web site at http://www.jamesriser.com/Cups/PaulFox.html It makes interesting reading.

Just want to throw in my endorsement for Riser cups. I'm giving serious thought to buying a set of Sherwood cups, just not sure which set. I own Johnson, an original Bertram/Miller set, and the riser sets and the Risers definately see the most action. They are beautiful, heavy, and handle like a dream. I also love the patina they develop. Never cared much for shiny brass or copper. Although If I pick up a silver set of Sherwoods, you can bet they'll shine like nobody's business.

When you say that you own an original "Bertram/Miller" set, which ones are they? Are they the Ross Bertram cups, or do you have a set of the ones that Magic, Inc. sold? There are big differences between the two sets of cups.

I have just received a set of the Brett Sherwood Silver Cups and the Penguin Copper Cups. What can I say about the Sherwood Cups that hasn't been said already? They are fantastic cups. The only thing I miss on them is the ringing tone I get when I do the cup through cup move with my copper cups.
I can with great confidence say that the Penguin Cups are excellent cups as well. Anybody looking for a workers set of cups and unwilling or unable to pay for "real" Paul Fox cups, should get these cups. Slightly heavier than my Paul Fox, but work like a dream. I also have a set of the JES cups and they are excellent also. In fact I may want to sell those as I am getting too many cups and I am not a collector. I orginally just wanted a back up set in case my Paul Fox got lost or stolen or damgaged. But you know how it goes, you can't buy just one. If anyone is interested in the JES cups let me know if you want them shiney or tarnished. I would hate to clean and polish them and undue the tarnish work if that is the direction you want to go. I prefer my copper cups tarnished. Kirk G |

I just got a set of the copper cups from MM, and boy are they fantastic. I'm coming from a wood set (which Bill thinks is Uday-make), and these are just beautiful. They stack perfectly, have a near-perfect exterior (none of the tops are tarnished/unpolished, the dip is smooth and even, and the rim beads are nicely rolled up to the cup).
I'm looking forward to polishing up my cup routine now. I couldn't even do the roll-back with the wooden ones (not a big deal, but still)... Bill: if I want these to tarnish to a nice rich golden/brown, I don't need to polish or wipe these, right? Btw, were the cups Ammar used on WGM, Paul Fox's? At the time, I thought they were a weird hardwood, because they looked so brown but they had a metallic ring that couldn't be just regular wood...and now I realize that they were probably copper. |

They probably were Paul Fox cups. I don't have the video, so I can't say for sure. I have seen some clips of him doing the cups with a set of copper cups that look like Paul Fox cups. It is quite likely that he had or has one of the sets that Rings and Things made for Danny Dew before Danny sold the rights to Jeff Busby. These have the Magicpoxy finish and stay shiny for a long time.
I now have five sets of cups that were made for Danny Dew by various metalsmiths in the Denver area. His later cups were considerably heavier than his early ones, but you can spot them very easily once you have handled a few sets of them.

I saw Michael Last night at the Magic Castle and he was using copper Paul Fox Cups. At least that is what they looked like. I will talk with him again and confirm that with him on Sunday.

Read lots of bad things about the Penguin cups, and I'm not expert, but I do like them. They weigh 4.6 ounces each (can anyone tell me how that compares with other cupts?) and WILL hold a Lacrosse ball.

It sounds like you got lucky and got a good set. Others haven't been so lucky. It all boils down to what works for you. If your set takes a standard Lacrosse ball, great! Some don't.

I have an extra set of copper Sherwood cups that are my "workers." After fondling nearly 500 different sets of cups, these are the ones that I am most at home with.
I still love my van Dokkums, as well. The Monster cups are fun to threaten the neighbor children with!

Bill :
Why do you think it is that you are more at home with the copper Sherwood "workers" than than the brass Sherwoods. Is it that copper just has a better feel for you than brass. Fortasse |
