Just starting to build up that real interest in magic, and I am now in that stage that I want to learn to do magic with just about everything.
When it comes to coinmagic I would like to learn the basics, But my questiuon is: 1. What is the first non-gaff cointrick you learned? 2. What is the best (most easy to learn) Video/DVD out there for a beginner? F. |

Some simple 4 nickle trick when I was a kid from the klutz book of magic. Pretty good because I still do it(for friends and stuff) and most people have no idea.....
I think the david roth line of coin magic video's is pretty good, at least the few volumes I have. |

If you don't count simple effects like a vanish and reappear. That one on Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic when he makes 4 half dollars appear in a line. Once I'd mastered the necessary sleight, I was straight into that one.

David Roth's DVDs/videos are great. Many of them are a bit more advanced but check into them. He explains everything very well.

I think the best way to get started is with a simple
2-in-the-hand one-in-the pocket effect. ...basically requires no slights and then you can throw in a slight or two as you learn them such as a shuttle pass or click pass. In the meanwhile you can work on misdirection and presentation with coins. With that said, I like the following for getting started that can all be done stand-up with no special surface and possible with no surface at all (in increasing difficulty): After Dinner Coin Trick (Tarr: Now you see it, Now you don't) Gregory Wilson 99 cent trick (Wilson: On the Spot) Tenkai Pennies (Sankey: Sankytized II) Mr. Clean Accross (Sankey: Rev. Coin Magic) Spellbound (Roth: I or II video) One is the onliest (Bannon: Impossibilia) Famous 3 coin trick (Brewer: Unexpected Visitor) No Jacket Required (Sankey: Sankeytized II) Coins Accross (Kam: a 3 coin phase from his II,III DVDs) Long Gone Silver (Kenner: Out of Control) 3-Fly (whoever's) etc. etc. Just some ideas, Frank

Wow, Frank...can't get much better than those...
If I had to pick my first one (man we're going back to 1969/70...) it would have to be the one where, a dime is shown at the fingertips, both hands empty (two quarters are in Downs Palm behind the dime)...the dime turns to two quarters...I still do that one today, as a quickie. Couldn't tell ya the name of that one, tho'... Doug |

Copper/silver transpo. A classic effect which I still perform very often.

Coins across seems to be to be the first one. The only other one is sort of a matrix with two covers and four coins and as you put the coins under the matte, they collect under one of the papers till the last one goes without you even touching it. I got it from the Houdinin on Magic book.

Good one Kirk. Wish I added that to my list.
You are right on! That is a great one and can be found in Mark Wilson's course on Magic. That's a great effect and one of the easiest. You do need somewhat of a quality surface to work on, however.

I'm not that of an expert on coin magic but my first coin magic video was Jay Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic and one easy and very simple trick that I perform sometimes and enjoy is the Rollover.
P.S. Frank, No Jacket Required is also on Sankey's Revolutionary Coin Magic dvd. |

I learned a great quarters across routine from my Arnold Furst lecture notes from 1970. He reminds me of a first generation John Cornelius.

I've heard too many times that a great place to start coin magic is the book "Modern coin magic" by J.B. Bobo. I haven't personally tried it yet, but also as a beginner I would like to hear some opinions on it...

You can't go wrong with a scotch and soda effect or two. Do it with the gaff coins to begin, but as you improve, you'll be able to do many copper / silver effects using real coins and sleights.

I was just listing where I learned it from... plus Sankeytized II is a Key Buy!!!!! Except for a few routines, the list I mentioned allows you to entertain people all night long with 4 half dollars, a coin purse, and borrowed pocket change. Part of me thinks that the more an effect seems impromptu, the more it seems like real magic and most of these effects fall into that category. Leaves 'em with that... "..and he did the tricks with my money!!!" feel. Frank

Bobo was the first book on magic that I bought. I bought it from a bookstore before I even knew what a valuable resource it was.
I read it for a full year before I even *met* another magician. The first coin routine I started with was a quick little coins across routine (can't recall the name of it, don't have the book handy for page ref) that uses six coins lined in two rows of three. The thing I like about that routine is the sound of the coins clinking as they travel. I've since made many changes to the routine, adding new sleights and subtleties as I've come across them. Think of it as a whitewashed canvas onto which you can paint the color of your personality. It's a good start to be certain. |

The first one I did was revealed in one of the World's Greatest Magic Teach a Trick.
The one where several people check if the coin is still under the hankerchief. It uses a C _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ E. Harris

I probably started with a simple two coin transposition which evolved with learned skills and sleights.
the first 'invention' would be a routine that came from a line in the first Ramsay book about 'invisible assistant named Miss Direction', the basic handling was published WITHOUT the presentation as 'coin go-return'... which also evolved as I learned.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I'm sure this was not the very first non gaff coin trick I ever learned but it was a very early one for me. Alan Ackerman taught me his version of the Al Baker Coins thru table. I learned it well over 20 years ago and still use it.
