David: I'm glad you raised this issue. I also try to wear a consistent outfit: red shirt, black pants and black and yellow "smiley face" tie. But like you, I've suffered through pool parties and outdoor venues in August that just don't lend themselves to this attire.
Recently, for those events I've started wearing a red t-shirt with a cariacature (similar to the many on this message board) that shows me wearing the red shirt and smiley tie. I think that helps tie my "brand" together. I agree with Michael: your moustache and glasses are a perfect logo for you, similar to your avatar here. |

Mr. Pitts - great topic and an issue I have played with for several years as well. I think costuming and branding go together. And like you, I have a clowning background - I'm a comedian for kids. I tried to change things up and wear a branded polo with jeans and chucks - just didn't work for me. I don't want to "fit in" at the pool party. I want to stand out and be different from the party guests. In hot weather I wear shorts - but they still fit with my costuming - not sporty.
Again - it's about my comfort during the show - but not my casual comfort - rather my comfort as a branded performer. The first time I saw Zuchini, I didn't care for his casual look -- and I still don't ... for me. For him it is great. Jeans didn't work for me. I will wear a polo for an outdoor ballooning only gig in the summer - but if I'm doing my show then I will be in my costume. I also happen to believe that the better you look - and the more distinctive without being distracting - the better. But yes, your look and your brand are connected. Personally, I preferred your old look to the new - that is personal preference not criticism. Peace |

Harris, the Zany Inventor and the medicine show are two different programs. And yes the Zany Inventor is my brand for that show.

This is an interesting topic because most people get branding wrong. Branding USED to be about colors, fonts and what you wore. Now what we wear has nothing to do with out brand. Sure, having a red bow tie could be memorable, but if you do wear a red bow tie and someone doesn't remember your name and they want to hire you, what will they put in the search engine to find you? Probably "red bow tie magician." If your website doesn't rank at all with title tags, meta tags, etc for red bow tie magician, guess what, you will be forgotten.
My point here is that building a successful brand is not just what you wear or what your logo looks like or any of that. What matters is much deeper than all that. What are your core values? Why do you do what you do? These are the types of discussions one should have when considering their brand. Then the logos and what to wear will make more sense. What if your ideal client hated red bow ties (just using red bow ties as a generalization)? Would you change your red bow tie? Josh

You make good points Josh,
Many other factors such as price and even the type of effects/performance style brand you |

You can brand yourself in anything. Costuming doesn't rank in top 10(in my opinion), when it comes to branding. Entertain, use your name, humanize yourself before and after show, remember kids names, be part of party, and the kids will request. In 20 years of performing I've never once, not once, heard a kid talk about a show they saw at the circus or at someone's home and say, 'I loved the costume'.
'He was funny', is said. Entertain and humanize and your popularity will grow |

Even though no one here said colors, fonts, clothing, etc. are the only elements of branding, they certainly are part of it, and important parts at that. How many people can look at the Coke symbol without the word Coke and instantly know what it is? How about the CBS "Eye?" Or the NBC Peacock? Quote:

Now you're seeing that it's part of it. And I agree. There are many elements that together make the brand. And they are all effective. That doesn't mean you don't have to have them all. But the more elements you have, the more solid you can make your brand. (The "you" there is a general "you" of course.) And yes, you are very right about the name. If people don't remember your name, well, that just ain't good. Bazinga! |

Happy Masticating...that's me chewing on all this.
Dr. Laugh was created by my consumers. The name I "branded" for the previous 12 or so years was The Nearly Normal Magician. Folks just started using the name. So instead of correcting them, I used it. When we listen to our audiences, we grow. A full cup can not be filled. Working repeat gigs is nice...as soon as Nigel makes an appearance...folks familiar with him, start telling their friends to get ready..or you never know what Nigel will do... or _______ Does anyone do any journalling to let more of you and your brand out. Years ago, I started using The Artist Way by Julia Cameron. There is gold out there, in non magic sources. Of course there is also gold in magic writers, writing about non magic themes...such as Sankeys Zen and the Art of the Monologue.....

But starting when I was working on a riverboat casino, people just started calling me "Magic Mark". I never encouraged it, I never suggested it, but I think I know why it was happening. I think the reason it appealed to people was both the alliteration (both words start with "M"), along with the popularity and auditory familiarity of the "Magic Marker" brand pens. I don't think "Magic Fred" or "Magic Bob" is as catchy. In any case, I figured why fight it and never turned back. |

Starrpower,
Yep, hard to fight it. When the audiences give you a name, at least they'll remember it. Thankfully it wasn't a bad name, eh? Bazinga! |

David, great topic! My standard outfit is black slacks and shoes with colourful shirt and vest and I wear one of my piggy ties (I have a collection - Bacon - piggy get it?)
I used to wear a black vest but people started saying it was too much black and not friendly enough, so I am going to more colour in my vests. In summer, I sometimes wear a nice embroidered polo, but if at all possible, I like to wear my standard outfit because I think I look like a performer, and I FEEL like a performer. Check my website and you will see the majority of pictures are either with the coloured vest or the black one (older pictures) Casual suits some people, but not my taste. Off course I am not a magician, but a ventriloquist so what do I know LOL

Vents (like us) need love and a brand too.
Seems like the question of the year for young entertainers as well. Teens I work with are asking about the business beyond the "tricks, puppets and props". Oh my said Nigel, the puppet that rocks and talks Harris Still too old to know it all
