Lots if writing on fashion sense.
Is it important to maintain mental, spiritual and physical fitness. I'm not talking about getting doctorates, religion and marathon runs. Are things like reading, meditation or other connections to nature, walking or other workouts important to you. Reading could books of interest to you or your target kid show age group. Though we love our jobs as entertainers (full or part timers) shows and life can bring stress Carrying props and doing 1 or 8 shows a week can be physically demanding. Walk, jog , bike and or weights help me. As I get a "bit older" ,I find restorative Yoga beneficial. ....and you????

I would love to keep fit but I have had arthritis since nineteen, so that cut short my running days. Funnily enough the arthritis was finally put under control last year, so now I am desperately trying to drop six stone to resume what I left off twenty five years ago. First race is in June, 1,500 meters.
Hill walking is another thing I have been able to resume. Spiritual things play no part in my life, but it is a lost day if I haven't had a chance to read for a few hours. But I don't believe any of it has any effect on my work as an entertainer.

For me running and biking can be spiritual. Both also directly effect my energy for kid, family and other shows. Also energy to practice rehearse and write.
Music is also part of my on and off stage time. Currently watching PBS / Lawrence Welk.

For me running could be a meditative experience. Unless there was a guy ahead of me... Then it became a competitive experience.

Regarding arthritis, I know my fingers get stiff from repetitive string playing or certain magic stuff such repetive coin or card practice or longer gigs.

My condition is confined to my knees. I spent twenty years asking for a double knee replacement but apparently they won't do it until I am in my fifties. Why would I need my knees then? I needed them the past twenty years!

Last years valentines present to myself was an MRI.
Last birthday gift at 60, I got the shingles vaccine. ......and yes I use humor about physical issues at family programs. Such as getting down to pick up a dropped prop is easier than getting back up. The MRI was related to L1 -L2 problems. Thus the wonder of restorative yoga. At least for this guy. Side note performing in pain, physical and or emotions is interesting. Harris Still too old to know it all

Good question Harris. I am always working on myself, because ultimately, I am the act. As entertainers, we are the product that we are selling.
You mentioned "The Artist's Way" in another thread. I read that and I write every morning. I meditate. I walk and read, but not enough. I consider a lot of what I do every day to be spiritual work. |

I try to take care of myself. I train with weights 34- times a week. I try to do cardio and I DO a little, but I just hate it. I have recently given thought to yoga. I used to meditate a lot in my younger days. Its very relaxing.
I get tired of noise. Most people when they drive, they have to have the radio playing the whole time. I find myself just shutting it off and being one with my thoughts. I love peace and quiet. Because when my show starts, all hell breaks loose!

Being able to be at peace within quiet=priceless
I went from a definition of cardio being a walk to the mailbox, to 4 spin classes per week. A direct benefit is being able to hold long notes on my harmonica. Comedy bit-after holding a note for 23 seconds, I pretend to look at my watch for another 17 or so seconds.( quitting before the laugh ends)

Frankly, I don’t know how you can do this job without being physically fit. Between carrying equipment in and out of gigs and the amount of energy is takes to perform, being in good physical condition is imperative. Plus, proper diet and exercise is preventative medicine. You will get sick less often and we all know exuding a ton of energy when you’re sick is no fun! In this job we don’t have the luxury of calling in sick.
I’ve been a runner all my life and fortify that with weight training.

If Tommy James lifts weights 34 times a week, how does he fit in any shows?

I do think fitness is a vital factor in performing, especially with the energy needed to do kids shows. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple of dvd's of fat magicians huffing and puffing and sweating by the time they are 10 minutes into their show. If you are in bad shape, it will reflect badly on you no matter if your stage, props and costume look great.

Wednesday, makes it 9 years without a cookie.
Got the idea from a friend who goes to Over Eaters Anonymous. They are a 12 step group that probably does not have very good potlucks. The food abstinence was part of breaking a pattern that led to problems getting buckled into my strait jacket. Bringing the jacket to a leather repair shop to be let out was an interesting experience. Harris Still too old to know it all

I actually feel like I get better reactions from my magic when I am in good shape. I think it comes down to confidence. If I step in front of an audience looking and feeling great then the audience picks up on this extra confidence I have within myself.
It is just a personal opinion but I feel like being in shape is even more important for mentalists who are espousing the powers of the mind. I couldn't step in front of an audience and portray myself as someone who has the power to do amazing things with my mind but be out of shape and overweight at the same time. Just my opinion.

I had a triple bi-pass 8 years ago, but exercise most days, stairs, up-down up-down,etc and exercise bike.
Love performing, content with where I am, at 76 I say every year this is the last, not quite as straight as I used to be, and would be content to exit this world as Tommy Cooper did. |
