That sounds truly, erm, consequential, and dark, and mysterious.
Mods, please lock the thread? |

Sadly, now that this has come to light, it is easily duplicated with or without a dvd. Unfortunately many have been ripped off over time. Bob Kohler, Scott Alexander, just to mention a few. Magic Makers and Chinese have not done us well. We need to get this fired up everytime on every trick where our friends are taken.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

Do you do much face spitting, Tom?
Anyway, I'm pleased to see the correct philosophic razor applied on this occasion. There was some confusion regarding RED. Lads will be lads, eh? |

Crooks who doesn't care have no development costs, low production costs and profits are high.
Doing the right and proper thing, like Alakazam just did, is costly. It is not fair to lose just because you are being ethical. So, if you approve of Alakazam's decision to withdraw Johnson's routine, then consider showing your approval by buying something from them: http://www.alakazam.co.uk/category-Alaka......cts.html |

Will this be available from Rajan directly?
On the serious side, if you are interested in how copyright should be handled for "orphan works," it is still a very live and active issue. The copyright office is holding a hearing for comments on March 10th (with comments accepted until mid-April). Read about it here: http://www.copyright.gov/fedreg/2014/79fr7706.pdf (starts in the last column on the right). As far as Rajan's options go, it's fairly clearly laid out here: http://copyright.columbia.edu/copyright/......e-owner/ I am of two minds on the topic. I do not want to see the dead dishonored, but I also hate to see good magic die. I would support some middle-ground compromise if one can be found. I am also quite proud of a community which so quickly and accurately responds to ethical violations, both the dealers and the magicians who do the research and are not afraid to speak out. Much respect. Much admiration. And I think this thread should stay (perhaps deleting the youtube link). It is a shining example of the community policing itself. It does those involved much credit. |

Could they have even become classics? I think we forget, because it's lost to our view, how effects become loved favorites, cherished friends, even if they started the trip with accusations of theft and copy-catting. So, OK, selling someone else's routine without permission is wrong and might get you nailed on a copyright violation. But before this thread, I had no idea such a wonderful routine existed. It's well done and inspiring. I can't do what is shown, but I hope others with better skills will take inspiration from it and find their own way to make it their own. But maybe I'm mistaken. I don't know how many who have commented here had already seen the prior performance. At least one did - he posted a link. The video has been up for years. I'm still happy to have seen it. Does it have to be taken off youtube to prevent theft? This quote is from the video description: "He never really got the exposure to the magic faternity that he really deserved." Will he get more recognition now that he's deceased and the routine is no longer performed by anyone? |

The comment about a free copy of Red was funny in a way. But what is going on with seeming that it's ok to borrow/release other people's work almost verbatim?
On top of that, the short amount of time that I watched the trailer, seemed to be exposure of the spongeballs. |

So if someone has already bought this release and wants to perform it what do they now do?

I called Alakazam to ask if I could return the product and get a store credit (the sponges are unused, packaging in 'as new' condition). Alakazam were great and said yes without hesitation, proving they are prepared to do the right thing and deserve their good reputation. As for the routine, until something is sorted, I won't use it. I would hope that something is worked out in the future, as I do think that this would make a great starting point for a routine. |
