Just in case anyone is wondering, Al and I are not brothers. I have a brother named Alex, and a sister named Ali, but no Al.

I think Dynamike is right. A demo video will certainly help your sales. I have one demo video on my website and currently working on a second demo video for a different market. Demo videos can play a huge role in the decision making process of a customer, especially when you are advertising on places like Thumbtack, Gigmasters or Gigsalad.

I advertise on two of those you mentioned. I actually have a link exchange with them as well.
I hate watching myself on video, I really really do. But, it has been very helpful in identifying area's I could improve on. Most of my tapings are just for personal use, but I have sent demo's to large companies so they could see a sample of how I am with children. I also have reviews, but I think most people today can be skeptical of online reviews because they can be easily faked without anyway of knowing it. I have sent full performance video's to family members who live across the country who otherwise would never get a chance to see my shows, but just recently posted a video showing a few clips from some of my shows without revealing full routines on youtube, and my facebook page. I had been reluctant in the past to post video's online, but I'm glad I did.

After an actual paid performance, immediately afterwards, I will go to a coffee shop, sit down and write out two sections: "What went right? What needs improvement?" I will then list at least 5 things that went right about my performance and at least 5 things that need improvement. That way I am constantly improving my show. I like videotaping myself because there was a few times if I didn't I wouldn't have caught some mistakes I was making. So, I definately would encourage any professional performer to rehearsals and video tape their rehearsals. I am fixing to be working on my second demo video which is targetted at a different market than my first demo video. Constant rehearsal is also important that way you can flow through your actual paid show confidently and smoothly. I dress up in suit and tie, just like I was about to perform an actual paid show as part of my rehearsals.

Very true. I have to agree. Just want to add that I tape my rehearsals, but try to tape my actual performances as well. Things are very different between my rehearsals and actual shows. In my last fundraiser, I noticed that I placed myself in a bad position on the stage, blocking the view for one of my volunteers on stage. I would have never known this if I hadn't taped the show.
I will also watch it with my wife who is great at picking out things with me. I will never say I know enough that my shows never need improving. There is always area's I can improve on. I guess maybe some people have other means of accomplishing that, or have found their perfect niche.

Phil, how did you get the mother to sign the model release form for the pictures you have on your website?

Surely it's up to Phil or not if he has video or doesn't have video. He appears to be busy and doing just fine without it. The fact that many of us use video on our websites and find it helpful does not mean that everyone needs it.

Anyway I stopped as it takes me about 5 hours to get to most of these places . I have had many effects published in Abra mag and although it is out of print I also had stuff in Alchemy put out by practical magic phil

Having seen a few video clips on here lately, I am tempted to paraphrase Mark Twain:

Videos can definitely be a double edged sword. There only had to be one thing on there that a potential customer doesn't like and they will move onto someone elses website.

Especially after receiving very positive responses from magicians here on several videos I've posted in the past. Awards are what you make of them. The general public doesn't know the difference between FISM and winning a local magic competition. An award is an award as far as they are concerned. Being "Magician of the Year" of your local club has just as much weight in the eyes of most non-magicians as being named the Magic Castle's "Magician of the Year" They are both called "Magician of the Year" awards so they see them as being pretty much the same. I've won or have placed at lots of local and regional magic competitions and been named "Magician of the Year" so many times by my local club that, last year they named me "Perpetual Magician of the Year". But the only award I've ever used in advertising was when I won the PCAM Pro challenge in 2005. And I only did so because it was the first award that ever seemed to garner interest in the general public. And it only did that after they found out it came with t thousand dollar prize purse.

I have seen some of your video's and based on what I've seen, I think you are very professional and entertaining. I can actually watch your short video's with real interrest while thinking to myself, "He's really good".
There are few video's that get posted from time to time that I can say that for, but without being too critical, there are a few popular "pro's" who are members here with a good size fan base who praise anything they do, but one person in particular I find is very boring to watch and just resorts to lame gags to get cheap laughs. I have found it's easy to make children laugh at you, but that doesn't make you a good entertainer. I rarely post my video's online because I've watched them a zillion times myself and have usually picked them clean of every negative and critical observation I can see with them. I try to piece together something short and sweet, yet good enough to represent who I am and how I interact with the children. Most video of me is just meant for my own use. Quote: On , Payne wrote:

I think kids magic promo's may be taken in this vien phil |

It seems like my demo video has helped me book more shows, so I guess it's been an upside for me.
