After extensive research I have finally found the winning portable sound system. This one is high quality, fully battery operated, small enough to carry around, and loud enough for a moderate size audience and very reasonably priced. I wouldn't use it for 500 people from a big stage, but if it were a library room with 200 people, it would work great. OK, so what is it? The Samson XP40iW. Then you need to get the Samson Transmitter that is paired with your unit. They come in at least 10 different frequencies (both the speaker and the transmitter). And finally the headset mike, also by Samson. For some crazy reason I have never found these items listed as a set. They are not available in any Guitar Center or Sam Ash store I have visited. The speaker is, but not the transmitter or headset. The folks at both those stores don't even know about the matching headset and transmitter. They will pull out the very expensive ones, but not the ones I got. In fact the high end mike headsets are too power hungry to work well with the transmitter. The Samson XP40iW with built in receiver costs $300, the Samson ST5 transmitter pack is $45 and the Samson HS5 headset is $38--so the full set up is around $380. You can't compare this to the Chinese imports. I ordered 2 different ones from Chinese makers and sent them right back (thank God for Amazon's return policy). I highly recommend this system--it's much louder than my previous MiPro system.

YES...finally someone talking some sense around here. It's tiring always reading posts about the latest piece of ^&%*) and how great the sound is. The Expedition Express is a wonderful speaker with a nice rich full sound. It's perfect for in home birthday parties. No need to carry extension cords, move furniture around to look for outlets and light weight and portable. I've used it for school shows and would say it's good up to about 150 people. Outdoors it does the job depending on competing noise. I have two for better outdoor coverage. When show is done it's a simple matter to pick them up and move them backstage. I have a Shure mic that I converted to battery power and use Show Cues for the music.

If only they made those with built in wireless! It would be the ultimate system!

John,
Thanks for pointing that out. It looks like I have to buy the speaker first, then buy the transmitter that corresponds with the speaker, is that right? The go-getter seems a bit pricey for what it is, plus I can't find it online anywhere besides one on Ebay. Thanks for your help! - Kevin |

I believe the model Gregg mentions comes with the wireless handheld. But yes I think your correct to say you'd have to buy a transmitter if you wanted a headset mic.

Just bought one to test it out, wow, that's guy is great!
The only thing is, I'm not totally happy with the sound from the hand-held microphone. If I'm holding it, it's fine, but otherwise, I think I'll need to order the wireless headset and try that one. Thanks for the suggestion, it's a great sound system for anyone looking! - Kevin |

B&H Photo carries all the parts. The speaker (and yes, the model I mentioned is wireless) the transmitter pack and the headset. They clearly list which frequency each speaker is and have a different picture for each one. I am continuing to use this with great satisfaction. I almost never pull out my larger plug in speaker any more. Set up and pack up time is very quick. In the past, I only used a speaker if absolutely necessary and my voice would be raw at the end of the day. Now, my default is I always bring it in, and if it is a rare party with 5 quiet children and two nannies helping to care for them and keep them orderly, then I simply don't use it. In other words, I always use it.

I have a similar system as John. Show Cues and a Shure head set mic. John, how did you go about converting your mic to battery? If it's cheaper then $38 maybe I'll convert mine. Other wise it wouldn't make sense. I have some Bose speakers but they're kind of a pain. The wireless route sounds nice and simple.
Gregg, I see the Samson XP40iW on their website but I can't find the transmitter or the headset.

I did ordered this system from B&H and received yesterday. I also have a mipro system and I will say that this SAMSON is amazing. The wireless head set system is the most minimalistic I have ever used and it is great. The charging dock for my ipod nano works like a charm even with the ijet connector in between. I also picked up a bluetooh adaptor at B&H photo that connects to the ipod dock and then by magic you can connect via bluetooh. It is also made by SAMSON.
The only thing it will make this system better it will be to have an RF controller included but my ijet is doing a great job. Also I am surprised that SAMSON does not have a carrying bag for this beauty. Guys, if you are doing shows of less than a 100 I will recommend this beauty. All in one system, long battery life, great microphone and charger for your ipod with no wires. B & H shipped fast and they have the right combination for magicians http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/78......_PA.html |

How many hours of battery life do you get on a charge? Does it have the option to plug in if the battery dies?
thanks mark |

I have and use and Anchor Explorer PRO w/DPA headset.
I use it for a Birthday Party and for large crowds in large rooms. No plug in needed. I replace battery every 3 years. But not with battery plus batteries. I use the company Anchor recommends. Also use MP3 Tech. I love this thing. MP3 Tech is powered by Three 9V Batteries. I do my show in the middle of a field if I have to.

George is the fellow who told me how to make the battery pack for the MP3 tech. Since I now use Show Cues instead of the MP3 tech, I starting using the battery pack with my Shure mic. Of course it works great. I think of George every time I plug it in.

I've purchased a Samson xp106. It is the same size a bit lighter and 100 watts as opposed to the 40 watt speaker mentioned above. There are two versions: one has Bluetooth and a Bluetooth microphone, the other has a regular mic and plug in xlr connection. I like it a lot.

Wwhokie1,
In theory you get 8 hours of battery life. I still did not have an opportunity to test this out. What I like about this particular one is that everything you need is in one pack. You get your speaker, your ipod charger, your mic receiver...all in one single unit...no cables to connect. You just need to worry about having a 9V battery for your mic and your ijet remote and you are in bussiness. The other Samsons mentioned here do not have an ipod dock...at least I have not seen one besides this model. If more power is needed this model can be linked with either a second speaker of the same model or a bigger speaker from the same brand as the one proposed by Chris. |

Also...on another note. Let's face it, most of us rarely work for groups larger than 100 in the audience, so getting anything bigger can be overkill. But like I said, if more pwr is needed it can be added. The microphones is just freaking AWESOME!!!!
