After some deliberation I have decided to forget the possible embarrassment I may cause myself and ask my question. I recently decided to binge on some movie classics and shamefully (and I must say shamefully) I had never seen The Godfather before. I rented it and must say I highly enjoyed it but did have one problem. I understand perfectly the basic outline of the movie but details seem to have flown right past me.
*****Spoilers ahead***** I understand Sollozo wanted to sell drugs and Corleone refused so Sollozo or Tattalia or Barizni had him hit?? Was Sollozo with Tattalia? If so, why was the Corleone family against Barzini at the end? At the beginning of the movie Luca goes to visit Sollozzo and meets Bruno Tattalia, later after Corleone is almost attacked at the hospital Tattalia is hit the next morning. Yet Phillip Tattalia was at the meeting of the major Dons. Who was Bruno? I understand he must have been his son but was that the Tattalia that was hit? Also, what is the connection between the Corleone son-in-law and the hit on Sonny? I'm lost there as well. To conclude, what was with Fredo and Las Vegas connection and was Michael Corleone attempting to go legit for real and if so, why did he kill off everyone and what was his deal with Moe Green? I know, I know, thousands of questions that make me look like I don't understand a thing but I watched it while I had the flu so maybe that's why? I understand this is a lot to answer but I'm sure there must be some fanatic who's just dying to gobble these questions up .....Thanks in advance! |

This is a film that MUST be seen more than once in order to understand all that is happening. Watch it at least two more times, each time give yourself about a week or so to think about what you saw and remember, then re watch it. You will learn more with each viewing.

Total - you need to watch it again. You'll understand - I would explain but I am too lazy to type it all out. But I will make you an offer you can't refuse. If you watch it and still don't get it PM me. I'll explain.
Jonesc - Fire up the VCR or DVD or whatever and watch them! You can skip three if you are short for time. It wasn't very good at all IMHO.

I know this is an old post and the OP has probably already gotten his answers, but I thought I'd answer the questions in case anyone else was confused.
Bruno was Philip's son and the one they hit offscreen. When Vito had the meeting with all the dons and Barzini was the one that voiced his support of Vito allowing them to use his influence for the drug trade, Vito realized that Barzini was the one financing the Tattalia's and was really the head of the whole drug thing. Regarding Carlo, the son-in-law and the hit on Sonny, the Tattaglias/Barzinis wanted to get Sonny as revenge for Sollozo and McCluskey. They knew that Sonny was angry at Carlo for beating up Connie and Sonny had threatened to kill Carlo if he did it again, so they paid Carlo to beat up Connie on a certain day knowing that Sonny would find out, fly into a rage, and go after Carlo so they could ambush him on the way. Remember, the Corleone's were in hiding in their compound and hardly ever left so Sonny had to have enough motivation to be drawn out. Was Michael attempting to go legit? Who knows? That's certainly what he told Kay but you could make an argument either way. He killed the heads of the 5 families because the Corleones were losing power and were in danger of being taken over by the other families. In that move, he solidified the Corloeone's power and put them back on top. I would strongly suggest reading the book as it explains so much more than the movie does. Fredd |

At first glance I thought that you were talking about the godfather of the magic Café Vinny Marini.
All of the confusion that you experienced with the godfather movie can be answered if you watch it again.

Tony Giorgio does a good trick in it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

If you read the book, there is more about the singer who appears in at the wedding at the beginning of the movie. You will also learn something quite...interesting...about a part of Sonny's body!

I had no problem understanding the whole plot, but I am Sicilian. Did you get up several times during the movie, or wern't you paying close enough attention to it?

So Sicilians are born with a component that makes them understand movies about the Mafia?

That was a joke you big turkey.
You are absolutely right, but I come from a town in Pennsylvania that was settled by many Sicilian families a hundred years ago, my parents were bilingual, and organized crime was common when I was a boy. The Godfather was an olive oil importer, and I have olive oil running through my veins. Oh yes did I say that you were a big turkey?

The book is quite good. Reading it will be a treat, and answer many questions about the movie. As Mario Puzo described it, it is about a king and his 3 sons. The Mafia business is just local color. That being said, many of the specific incidents were taken from news reports and histories that do correspond to actual crimes and crime syndicates.
Another very funny book about two elderly mafiosi and the plots they hatch is Prizzi's Honor by Richard Condon. It was also filmed, but I never saw it. Richard Condon also wrote the Manchurian Candidate. Woland |

Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you, but don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever.
