The colleges stance, as is often the case, is to not personalize the animals as they are considered wildlife. There was a juvenile eagle perched above the nest an hour or so ago that was eventually chased off by the adult male. You could see it on the approach cam. That's why I get nervous when the eaglet is left unattended! I believe the mortality rate of an eagles in it's first year is below 50% with the first six months being the most crucial time. Only about 1-10 ever make it to adulthood (4-5 years). I really hope at least one of the eggs in the Decorah nest hatches. That cam has sound on it. You can see the eagles on the Berry cam vocalizing but unfortunately can't hear them. |

The Mon is the big one.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I've been following this thread since landmark posted it and I have to publically think him for putting it up. My wife and I have been captivated with this each day and we eagerly await the fledgling's first flight. There are amazing facts on the site, including that about forty percent of the first flight ends in their death. Let's hope this little one isn't in the forty percent. Also interesting to learn that the male and female remain partners till one dies.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

It seems like a spunky place, Christian, 27,000 acres, 2100 undergrads, strong emphasis on experiential learning. Could be a good fit for the right student. The academics don't look very strong (for example, you can't major in math--only minor) and the performing arts offerings are slim (only a minor in theatre; from the production photos, it looks like the budget is small, though the outdoor production of A Midsummers Night's Dream looked like fun), but it does seem that the college prepares students for practical future work on a certain level, and the environmental related programs look useful.

Yes it is developing at an amazing rate. It's wings, which looked like flippers a week ago now actually look like wings with a humerus and a radius. I get a kick out of it's feet, they almost look like the feet of an adult.

Yikes, the little one just pooped! Must'a shot it about a foot out of the nest. Mom or pop took a midinght snack on something in the nest; enough to wake the little 'un. Put's its butt in the air and shoots out the white stuff. Now he's hungry! Wants into this action. Amazin'.

Is that first time you've witnessed that, Bob? That's how they keep the nest clean and avoid hitting Mom or Pop or the food or siblings, etc. They've got an outhouse, see?

Actually, the second time. Penguins in Antarctica pooped the same way. I guess I thought it was because of their upright posture. Anyway, sorry to say Laurie, I never much paid attention to these kinds of things before. But this cam is great!

At least one of the eggs is starting o open up on the Decorah eagle cam. There are three in the nest.
http://www.decoraheaglecamalerts.com/ The Hooded Mergansers that nested in the Wood Duck house have all hatched. Hard to tell how amny ducklings are in theem, but there were 19 eggs originally. Keep on eye on them, they could jump from the box, literally, any minute now. http://woodiecam1.com/ |

There are two babies now in the Decorah eagles nest, hatched last wed and thursday.
http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles Also found a live cam of a Great Blue Heron rookery in the Horicon Marsh. It's mating season. I've spent a lot of time in and around the Horicon. It's a world class birdwatching/waterfowling area. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/horicon-ma......t-camera |

All three eggs in the Decorah nest have hatched.
“I am completely amazed that this pair of eagles hatched all three eggs due to extreme low temperatures and heavy snows. “Given the extreme cold and heavy snow, we weren’t sure any of the eggs would hatch. However, the eagles persevered through minus 40 degree wind chills, direct temperatures of minus 20 degrees, multiple snowfalls and drenching rain,” |
