I just received a set of these silks from Mr. Sanders, and all I can say is that they are Awesome! Not only are the reasonably priced, but I received them 3 days after I ordered them. I ordered them for a Cub Scout show I have for the end of the month, and the blue and gold colors are beautiful. Very well made.
Highly recommended! Thanks Bob! |

Bob is da man! I have made many purchases from him and he has always been great to deal with! He has great customer service and he ships very promptly. Another huge advantage is that you can get the exact colors you want. You just can't beat Mister Sanders!

Thank you guys for the great words of encouragement.
The 20th Century Silks are a very versatile prop for loads of different routines. Create your own patter to fit the venue. It also supplies a practical way to vanish an 18" silk in Silk to Egg. I combine them in my shows. Of course, I never import or offer anything for sale I don't also use in my shows first. It avoids a lot of embarrassing situations. These are not the toy props commonly found today. We provide these for the pros. They are also real 100% China silk. Unfortunately too many "Silk Tricks" offered today have zero silk in them. Thanks again for the kind words. They are magical! |

Since I am the importer and not a retailer, there is no retail site. Perhaps you can catch me at a lecture or magic convention.

Bob makes one of the best 20th Century Silk sets I have ever had. Buy one (or two ) from him and you will not be disappointed. Very well made.

For you old pros, this is probably going to sound weird, but is there any "instructions" or suggestions that come with Bob's 20C silks.
I ordered a set from Bob, they are here and are really nice, but some "paper" might have been nice. Or is it that simple????? Thanks. |

It is pretty simple, simple makes the best magic. Simply - tie two silks together and set aside, in a glass or around the back of your neck. Vanish a different color silk using your favorite method or apparatus. Grab one corner of the silk in the glass and pull fast and in an arc or your favorite stage gesture. Display the vanished silk has appeared between the two previously knotted silks. If behind the neck, reach with both hands on each side and pull as you raise the silks high over your head, showing the vanished silk has traveled through the galaxy and appeared knotted between the other two silks. Give it some thought, practice, excitement, and showmanship.

Magic Rik! You can check out the you tube "series" of 20th Century Silks DEMONSTRATIONS (definitely NOT performances!!!). A few months ago, I "stumbled" upon the "series". YUK!!!
Each one was worse than the last one!!! I'm sure that Bob's instruction sheet will be better! --It can't possibly be any worse!!! I'm publisihing MY 20 C routine in the book, which is now being proofread. I'm more than sure that Frank Ducrot (originator) would be pleased and happy with it--and, I hope that readers will be pleaed, too. I KNOW IT HAS PLEASED THOUSANDS OF KIDS IN THE PAST 40 YEARS!!! It's SIMPLE and FUN! Props needed: 20 C set of silks, a TT, and a wand. It's next to closing in my rlrmrntsry school program. I use the Burling Hull "Elusive Silk" technique to vanish the rainbow. I've ELIMINATED the awkward "pa****g" of the rainbow. I have 2 ways to pad out the routine, which will pad out the basic routine from 3 minutes to 6 minutes, 1 minute of the pad needs only a string of 6 12" silks. The 2 minute (+) pad, needs a bunch of 12" inchers and almost any small production prop. (I use a Demon Wonder Box with the extra load gimmick) Sixk.

Davenports Demon Wonder Box is very rare these days. Finding an extra load is even harder, because people do not keep thing together.
Loftus Novelty has made an inexpensive version of the Demon Wonder Box, that they call the Silk Box. Not a very exciting choice of names for such a famous prop. This version has the added ability of being examined after the production. No extra load is available though. Click here to view attached image. |

Thanks Bill, I had not seen (or heard of) the Loftus "DWB". About 20 years ago, Duane Laflin and I were working a "weekend convention" in Indiana, Duane had never seen a DWB, I showed him mine. Later, he found a source in India. I don't think it was as well made as mine, but it worked.
I bought mine from the estate of "Doc" Karland Frischkorn (Norfolk, VA) in 1954.( $5.00) There was no extra load though. About l985, I attended an auction in Milwaukee, WI. Herb Runge had an assortment of "odds 'n' ends". One of the items was an extra load! He didn't get an opportunity to get his stuff up for bid. Heading back to my home, I drove through Shawano, WI,and phoned Herb. I stopped to see him and he still had it all in a box in his garage. YUP! I "measured" the gimmick with my eyes. I was sure it would fit. He wanted a buck. Like the old Svengali Pitchman used to say: "I nearly tore my underwear, getting out my wallet!" Mine is not a Davenport,It's a knockoff, made by Sherms,I think. Herb's gaff fit perfectly. Total: $6.00! A few years later I bought a Davenport DWB at an auction. It was well made, but my Sherms was made better! Davenport's was held together with bolts and nuts, and the nuts would work loose. I sold it. I have a "collection" of routines and instruction sheets (including National Magic's (Jim Sherman) I don't think that most of the routines would "play" today. I use mine as a pad in my 20th C Silks. It plays! I've written up my 20th C Silks in "the" book. It REALLY plays!!!

The Loftus Silk Box is super heavy thick metal. Very sold box, I am sure they will be around for a long time. This model has a feature where the gimmick can be removed and the box handed out or the box can be shown very cleanly in all directions that is only sheets of metal. It does not have the a way for the silks to stay inside the gimmick very easily. There is no edge on the gimmick to hold silks inside. So if not loaded with tucks, surprising unexpected pop ups could appear prematurely.

Loftus has been "around" for a "few" Years. I was in the shop about 20 years ago in Salt Lake City. the kid behind the counter tried to sell me a book on TTa~ Happy to hear that they have one "on the market' But, sorry to hear that the load area does not have an "edge" to help retain the silks. I've never seen any "DWB" that didn't have a "turned in" edge to retain silks.
As far as I know, all DWBs have the removeable load chamber.(so that it may be examined, or an extra load added. I don't "pass the prop for examination", but, I have the youngster helping me, try to find a silk. That gives me an opportunity to kill the silks already produced, along with the gaff, and steal the extra load. Of all the "gezillion" production boc propd", IMO, the DWB is the most practical. It's not, obviously, for 6" Dragons! I don't iuse it just to produce some silks. It is used to try to find a silk that has disappeared. --I never "find" it! Then the kid helping, tries. No success! I load in the 'extra" and we get a 15' string of 12" half silks. I tried a 36" picture, a 10 foot streamer, etc. All took too much time to load, The string of 12"x is EZ to load, and just as effective.

I have done some research on the Internet, and found that the removable gimmick was not for passing out as you (Dick Oslund) say but for the use of the added extra load chamber. I have never owned a Demon Box, so when Loftus model came I was kind of excited to see the working and handle the prop. Nothing was mentioned in the instructions why the gaff was removable so I just made up my own assumption, being they did not sell the extra load chamber.
I have also found out that some have a 2 compartment gaff and some a single compartment gaff, made at different times over the years by Davenports. The extra load chamber I only seen once in my life, can't remember where. I also found out that Davenports made a miniature Gung Ho type box as well. No tube used, but open at each end and rectangle box design with load on back door. It could exchange silks and do color changes as well like a silk cabby box. |

My DWB has a split compartment in the usual wedge shape and the opening is turned it so that the silks will stay where you want them to...for as long as you want them to do it. It is an original Davenport and although there are screws on the outside, there are no exposed nuts to come loose. Rather, the screws to into what I imagine is a threaded rod, around which the front and back doors are wrapped.
Dick, when you load in the kicker gimmick...does it 'talk' at all?

I've seen both split and "not" split models, in both Davenport and "non" Davenport models. I just remembered that I also bought a NON Chromed model (brass colored)at an auction a few years ago. I bought it for my pal, Jim Jayes. It was not a Davenport, but had no identifying maarks either.
My Davenport had nuts on the exterior. I'm not much of a mechanic! I never thought of LocTite!!! Many dealers "farmed out" manufacturing of props", which may account for the variatons of manufacturing techniques and hardware. I just got out the props to check. (I've never noticed any talking when I inserted the "extra".) This time I heard an almost insudible click. I doubt anyone five feet away would notice it. Posted: Nov 10, 2014 01:32 pm 0Oh! I just remembered! Abbott's #7 catalog had an ad for "Califactio of Silk". I never had one It was some sort of metal "stand" on which the DWB was placed. "Califaction" suggewts some sort of "change" due to heat. I'll try to dig up an old catalog for more details.

Interesting, Bill!
The brass one that I bought had no hallmark. (Davenport used a devil head or 'DEMON') Of course, Petrie Lewis props didn[t always have a "P&L" either.
