Does anyone know how to return the matte finish to silver coins that have a mirror-like polished finish while still maintaining the dark areas on the lower surfaces?
The reason I ask is I have coins that have dark lower areas, but the high areas are mirror-like which actually makes them hard to see. The matte-finish that you typically see on a silver coin when you first get them from a coin shop is actually much easier to see in performance. I'd like the coins to have the lower areas dark and the higher areas with a more matte finish. And I don't want to scratch up the higher areas with, for example, steel wool. Thanks! |

You could slightly oxidze the surface.

Hi Jonathan! Thank you for chiming in. That's interesting, you mean like dip the coin very quickly into bleach or some other darkening agent?

The idea is not to "darken" so much as create a fine oxidization layer from contact with air. I believe a little heat applied to clean coins does that. Gotta remove the oil from your hands first as that protects the coin from oxidization. If you're careful you can get the coin from mirror to matte and even take the coin to a nice patina.

Thanks again, Jonathan. I tried waving a clean coin high over an oven flame. I overdid it and ended up with some overall rust-colored patina. You're right about being careful. I'm going to remove that patina with some Wright's Silver Cream (and leave the lower areas black) and try again, but this time, I'll be more meticulous.
