I haven't used any coin gimmicks before (Except maybe a Dime and Penny)
I'm looking for new effects to add to my routine (and be somewhat lazier) Which would you say is the better? Butter Coin comes with an instructional DVD. Any advice would be appreciated! |

I've recently been through this exercise as I concluded that my CU repetoire was too 'cardy'.
Do some tests and find out which is the most popular coin in people's change pocket or purse. (In the UK, it's 50p and £1 coins.) Get a Scotch & Soda, Torn Coin, Eraser Coin (because they're both cheap and are quite effective in strolling situations), Cig Thru, Coin in Bottle and Lethal Tender. Determine some good ENTERTAINING routines with these gimmicks and REHEARSE them until you're blue in the face. (Owning a Coin in Bottle gimmick doesn't mean you can perform the Coin in Bottle as well as Fay Presto ) Doing this well will take as long as any ungimmicked routine from Bobo - but the result is likely to be 100% more entertaining! Oh, and one extra thing ... invest in Ultimate Coin Magic Collection 1 by David Roth DVD
Warmest regards

Hopping Halves is great, easy to do, 30 second reset time. If you get the hopping halves avoid the sterling magic set and go for the johnsons.
There more money but you will be happy you did.

I totally agree with getting the Johnson set over Sterling. I have been having lots of fun with my Buttercoin of late, and like you said, it does come with a DVD (making it an excellent value - especially after you do the Spectator's Signed Coin Through Table all out in the open and right before their very eyes). Their are other gaffed coins on the market that will allow you to perform the same effect, just not as openly and cleanly.
I would have to say though, if you are truly looking for something that is as 'easy' as possible, go with Hopping Halves. Great effect that has stood the test of time and leaves you TOTALLY clean because the last phase is a complete vanish. Very nice. |

Avoid the Butter Coin. I unfortuneately purchased it. And though the concept is great...the quality is TERRIBLE! I cannot even use the coin.
Hopping Halves is GREAT.

My vote also goes for the Hopping Halves. Super easy, and fun! Then learn the non-gaffed version.

I would go with the Johnson set of Hopping Halves .They are more expensive, but well worth the price. I agree with James in getting the David Roth collection Vol.1

Neither....i have used scotch and soda, hopping halves, and buttercoin before. through my experience, an expanded shell and the johnson copper silver brass set is the best. countless tricks can be performed with these gaffs. you will be looking at a near $100 purchase however.

I think the HH effect needs a MUCH BETTER presentation that what comes with the effect.
Anyone have one.

Frank - I am SO glad someone brought this up. After the first few times of performing this effect for specs out in the 'real' world, I soon discovered that it inherently renders a feeling of stupidity on the spec's behalf (moon goes away, what's left - no, both the sun and moon...sun goes away, what's left - no, both the sun and moon...etc.). I absolutely hate the fact that you are basically proving your specs wrong over and over again.
My other big dislike of the 'packaged presentation', would have to do with it being over so quickly. There is virtually NO build up whatsoever. Why SHOULD the specs even care to begin with? They shouldn't, and if you follow the presentation provided with the effect do not be disappointed if they don't. With these dislikes in mind I set out to reshape the presentation to enhance the effect, while at the same time keeping the spec's perceptions and feelings at the forefront of any of my ideas. I would be more than happy to PM you with my exact transcript and handling, but I thought it might be interesting, for now, to start with just the basic theme that I use and see how other members would build upon that (remembering the same guidelines that I had set forth for myself), and go from there. I might also mention that I have completely removed the "question and answer" segments from my routine, but am obviously open to any constructive criticism on this point. I think, by now, you can see why I chose to do this though. Characters: Half dollar = American apprentice magician English penny = British master magician Theme: Apprentice realizes that to be able to take his magical knowledge to the next level he must, not only find a suitable Master to further his training, but also to be able to keep up with the teachings that his Master lays before him. So the Apprentice sets upon a quest to find a suitable Master. He travels the world over before finally being approached by a very kind and elderly Englishman who understands the Apprentice's plight and agrees to take him on as his own apprentice if the Apprentice can pass but a simple test of magical skill. OK, I'm going to stop right there. In fact, that may have been a little much to begin with as the rest seems to just naturally fall into place, but still should prove interesting none-the-less. |

The Butter Coins stinks. I sold mine right away.
Johnson coins are far superior than Sterling. It's worth the extra money spent!!

Jimisolo,
Thank you for so nicely describing why I hate this effect. I'll never forget when I saw Harry Anderson do the hopping halves on a television talk show. It was horrible. He came off (in my opinion) as a smart alec and it wasn't very entertaining. I felt embarrased for him. Continually proving the audience wrong is insulting. However, I felt the HH had great potential so I worked out a HH routine where I was the victim of the darn coin always coming back. The finale, suggested by Dean Dill involves a very clever switch at the end... instead of ending with nothing in the left hand, you end up with 2-jumbo coins... 3" copper penny and a 3" silver half. It packs a great punch at the end. The fact that the copper jumbo is now an American penny is no big deal... they're still a copper and silver coin! I hope Dean doesn't mind me tipping this idea here.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Wanabe 1,
I would advise going with a higher quality folding coin. It will look and feel better. You will be able to perform those same 3 effects with any folding coin, so go for something that your going to like and be able to use for a while. If you're one of these guys that like to display the bitten piece on your tongue, then by all means go ahead and get the 10.95 coin. In this regard it would be worth it. (Just keep in mind that you WILL still need another high quality coin to actually display and perform the effect with.) |

Wannabe 1, I own this 3 in 1 quarter from Penguin
They are state quarters (which are good) Most people won't notice the sides of the folding coin but if you want a biting coin I wouldn't recommend it (as it doesn't look like teeth marks) However, I have tried on ocassion and have still fooled people with it. For the price though ($10.00) you can't go wrong. Just go learn a coin in bottle routine! |

I recently bought the sterling hopping halves and am very diappointed. The quality is not good. If your close to the spec they can see the coin edge is not normal. And as stated above the rouitine is lame!
This will be one trick I'll probably never do. My suggestion is to get scotch and soda you can't go wrong with this one. |

Re hopping halves......jimisolo is dead right get the story line right and you have a great routine. I use a totally different story with the halves and finish the story using a "wonder coin" ie a pound coin containing a 20p piece and a penny. and always get a terrific re-action from public and magicians alike.

I thought this was not a bad presentation as it is basically what I do--but jimisolo that sounds like GREAT patter...
Now what are everyone's thoughts on the Sacajewea Dollar/Quarter set??? thanks, -Jay I didn't post the link! http://www.penguinmagic.com/movies/products/3005a.wmv I thought that this patter is MUCH better than the included presentation. -Jay |

I to like the HH, but play myself as the on looking stooge watching two master magicians having a debate over which coin is better for fooling people, Helps to not make my audience wrong at any point. I like the Idea of ending with the jumbo coins; I will have to try to work that in.
The butter coin is ok for some special effects, but not too examinable. I usually switch it into a routine. |
