Seeing an earlier post dedicated to Peter Turner and Jacques, I thought back a number of years when I reached out to Richard Osterlind on The Magic Café.
Usually two or three times a year, I write a cover story for The Linking Ring, the official publication of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. I wanted to write a story about Richard, so I asked him. He was agreeable. He gave me his email address and phone number, and that began a long friendship with one of the premier mentalists in the world.
Over the years, he has been there to give me advice, help me refine a three-phase book test and just available when I wanted to talk. He has helped shape the performer I am today.
Richard Osterlind is by far the biggest name performer who has been a mentor to me, but no less important is Leland Pennington, my magical mentor. Leland, who worked with Richard on the release of Irresistible Forces (a coin bending effect), reintroduced me to magic, took me under his wings, took me to lectures, gave me effects, books and DVDs as gifts (and when he had doubles). He invited me to join the I.B.M., and suggested I help Sammy Smith and do some writing for The Linking Ring.
The fact is Leland and Richard have had an incredible influence on my development, and so have many of you.
For that, I am grateful.

Bobby, I can't thank you enough for that post. It really touched my heart.
As for Leland, he is incredible! He is one of the most generous people I have ever met and is a top notch thinker. You chose well when you befriended him. Frankly, both you, Bobby, and Leland, are two of my fondest friends and would have been worth the trip to Kentucky apart from Lisa! Thank you again for taking the time for reaching out just to be ... kind. |

Not only is Richard a great thinker he definitely seems like a cool person and your post is testimony to that.

Richard,
I agree with you about Leland. He is "classically" trained in our field, and it shows. The latest and greatest isn't always so. It's amazing how the two of you think alike. Bobby

Richard is the first performer I came across that left me consistently dumbfounded.
His material is so good it quickly becomes 'standard.' The real-time tear is a perfect example. |

Jeff,
That is a good way of looking at it. Richard has such an easygoing style on stage that he makes it look easier than what it is. If you ever have the opportunity to see him perform live, then I recommend you do it. I once drove about 5 1/2 hours to watch him perform at a rare public performance (most of his shows are private, corporate events). Although he makes it look easy, he is incredibly bold in his performances. It is incredible the amount of risks he takes. I absolutely love his Radar Deck. When I purchased his Dynamo Deck, he explained his originally handling of the Radar Deck, which I like better. Good insight, Jeff. Bobby
