I performed Heat in the late 1980's and early 1990's, but stopped after hearing about the potential harm. The product I used was a small, log-shaped pellet that I rolled between my thumb and finger.
I am interested to know if Hotspot/Heat, produced by Mr. de Rome, contains mercury. Thank you. Terry

I think it is safe to say from Carl not responding after Jamie's response that this product contains mercury. For that reason, I personally would not go near it, but that is my choice, based on my own view of what is acceptable and what is not. I have an old fashioned view of some things but not others. Mercury is in the latter category for me.
For those who like me, and I assume Jamie, take this view, it is very important that others understand and make an informed decision. No trolling here, I promise. |

I'm appalled that chemicals are being sold without being properly identified. Seriously! No matter how safe these mystery chemicals maybe, the idea of buying unknown chemicals to put on other people is just stupid. I could only speculate if laws are being broken with the selling and shipping of this product without proper identification on the label.
It could be safe, but all it takes is just one person, one incident, and one could be in serious legal trouble. I for one would want to know what I was using.

If you guys watched the video that Carl posted, you would know that he completely admits it contains mercury, albeit, 25 times less than other products that are similar.

It's good that he openly states it, and I like his song, too, but it's still not for me.

I wonder if this applies to the "Heat" product?

Hello everyone, ... and to the people that posted above,
I did not respond for 2 reasons, 1 was I never saw the posts till today, and 2... I have always said its a chemical, I have always said it contains mercury, I have never tried to hide the fact, and its on my video that I also posted, so I am trying to be as honest as I can, But I also state its the best version you will ever get to use, and for safety it is the safest version you will ever get to use,as its in Liquid form, and not in crystal, tablet or powder form that can get into your clothes. Im not going to give away the percentage as this is my secret, but it is minute to say the least, and I have been using this personally on a daily basis now for 40 or 45 years. not only handling massive quantities of this when I make up new batches of the trick, I do not think there is anyone on this earth that has had as much contact with this chemical than I have over the last 45 years, and thank god Im still breathing and NOT in a box 6 ft under the ground. The buying choice for my trick is down to the individual magician, its up to THEM if THEY wish to buy this and perform my this effect or not, Its a great feeling I'm sure when everyone jumps on the bandwagon, so called experts among us, that love telling other people what, and what magic trick they can and can not buy, especially from people so called EXPERTS that have and never will use it themselves ever, But these Experts ( we call them know it alls in the UK )sure seem to know EVERYTHING about it,, SO YES it does contain the smallest amount of mercury for the reaction to take place, Its a chemical, and as you all know, THAT NO CHEMICAL IS SAFE NONE WHAT SO EVER ITS A CHEMICAL, So please especially you Americans, Do not go swimming in any pool over in the states, as it contains a dangerous chemical called CHLORINE (or BLEACH if your English,) and if the pool attendant as put a little too much of this Chemical into the water, Then its very dangerous to swim in, Its not good for the skin as it can burn the skin really badly and blister, for your eyes it can cause blindness, or even worse if you swallow it causing vomiting and poisoning. Unless its you personally that had put in the right dosage of chemical, then it should be OK.

Anyway a UK magician BOUGHT my chemical trick with Mercury involved,
and tried it out himself this weekend, on a magic Face book web site today he wrote the enclosed review about it. MAGICIAN ROY BOND wrote on the World Magic Network FaceBook I have to say folks that after having tried a live performance of Carl De Rome's HEAT in a bar on Friday there were plenty of expletive's flying around .... And ... Almost as if Carl could see the future .... People were bringing their friends over and saying " do that trick on my mate !" .... It's a real crowd puller and you HAVE to have this little package in your pocket at all times because someone ... Somewhere IS gonna ask you to repeat it. A MUST BUY. http://www.cdrmagic.com/heat.html Remember all bottles of Heat/HotSpot bought from me personally carries a 7 day money back guarantee, even if you decide you simply do not like this effect, OR just decide its not for you, all you need to do is just return it, and I will personally refund your money back, my NEW advert is in the new Vanish magazine issue 13 out yesterday, on page 173, THIS MAGAZINE IS FREE TO ALL MAGICIANS and is well worth downloading, you can do so at www.vanishmagazine.com

It is a legal requirement to state the amount of mercury in the mixture. Avoiding this via the excuse "it's a magic secret'" is simply not good enough.
Carl, it is up to you if you wish to continue selling it. Just keep your fingers crossed trading standards never decide to take a look at it. Your helpful friend Jamie.

I heard that this product was banned from the Blackpool magic convention because of health & safety concerns.
Does anyone know what the specific issue was?

Isn't there slightly more to that story, Jamie? Or is that where the trouble started in the first place?

JAMIE FERGUSON.... YES HEAT is banned from the Blackpool magic convention by DEREK LEVER, and will be banned in 2015,
but honestly NOT because of the product, simply because it is me that makes it, AND no other reason, Me and Derek hate each others guts, and for the past 10 years I have been constantly letting as many magicians know what Derek Lever does and how many people he banns from his convention, For those that do not know Some of the other people Derek Lever has banned from his convention is UKs Biggest magician ever the one and only Paul Daniels, The Genii Magazine are not welcome to have a stand as they are banned, also Richard Kaufman is also banned personally, Craig Mitchel who writes for all magic publications and also FISM, and this is a good one SHAWN FARQUAR 2 times fism 1st place champion and also 1 time second place and 1 time 3rd place winner and president of the IBM,is also banned from Blackpool as well, Derek even tried to Ban SHAWN from his 2012 FISM but Eric over ruled him, The problem with DL is if you say or print anything against him its enough to get you banned from the BMC, IF I WAS TO MAKE THUMB TIPS or manufacture silks or a card trick .....THEY WOULD ALSO BE BANNED FROM DEREKS CONVENTION,

Well you cant get a better comeback than that ! Its good to hear Carl rebuffing each attack. I am sure he would not sell this product if he thought it was harmful.
At the same time I really appreciate the likes of Jamie Ferguson bringing up critical questions . You can get a lot of flack on these boards for daring to challenge the creators . So thanks to both of you and keep it up! |

So to be clear Carl , although you rightly don't want to reveal your recipe, may I ask a couple of questions , as I genuinely want this product...
1.if the quantity of mercury chemical in a dose given to a spectator was revealed to trading standards , they would say it was perfectly safe for any adult to handle? 2. Is the quantity handled by a magician in regular use , by hand , also safe . According to health and safety standards. 3. Has this ever been verified or checked with any official body, other than magicians? Though you yourself are standing up as an example of good health , I am not sure we can always tell the mental and physical health of a magician compared to the average mad hatter of old ! |

Surely the simplest way to put all this debate to bed, would be for someone to purchase a bottle and give it to 'trading standards' with a letter of concerns, and ask that it be tested and verified safe.
