Hello.
I'm fan of illusion magic(not yet illusionist, sorry) which lives in South Korea. Recently I am think about to write and publish new book which includes illusion ideas. Because of I am not able to make illusion stuffs (I just have 'researched' illusions using youtube video), so I cannot make exact plan for making, but I believe I have invented(and some-improved) new illlusions idea. One of worries I have, is "is this attempt can go over into existing magician society?" So What are you think about this idea? is it good to magic society, or harmful thing? |

I think it is fine as long as it is clearly stated that the book is a collection of ideas and concepts but have not been built and tested. Many times, a good idea may seem good in the mind or on paper, but building the actual physical illusion that works is a completely different thing.
You may want to try to build or have someone build at least one or two of your ideas to see if your concepts are physically possible to build. Sometimes, something as "simple" as a making curtains drop from the top of a prop is easy to imagine but very difficult to fabricate. Such as ensuring it works 100% of the time so that all the curtains drop together, flowing nicely and covering whatever you need to cover. Having said that, there are many illusionists who are experienced in building but are looking for ideas to inspire them. However, the ideas must be workable and the physical prop must be possible to build. J C

Mr. Sum is right on. There are several good books out there that are along the lines of what you are thinking. Go for it but follow Mr. Sums advice.

Dear J.C. Sum, Thank you for your kind help, first,
But to find right place and environment to make stuff for testing is not possible to me. Because my family hate magic stuffs, so I can't make something in open state. And also, Korean Magic fandom(or interested people on magician works) neither have interest on illusion. They just have interests on close-up, especially on Card, and some kinds of stage effects(especially on manipulations, like CD, T-Shirts…), but they do not have interests on illusion stuffs. Surely, the two biggest magician, Charming choi and Lee, eun-gyeol does illusion stages performances, and some magicians do some 'old' illusion stuffs, also. But, I cannot meet people who have real passions on illusion magic around here. So, I neither make illusion stuff in reality, nor test it with someone in around here, So, I was thinking about just make of 'illusion idea book'. So, what I have to test this ideas in reaity? |

The working magic illusion builder community is very concerned about practical and workable illusion designs. If you are targeting that market, you will have an uphill climb as you are an unknown. That said, truly new good ideas, even from unknowns are welcome in the illusion magic world. I think the primary concern working illusionists would have us that you are not an illusion builder yourself.
Publishing a compendium of illusions based on what is online alone might in fact be interesting only to other audiences. Then you get into the problem of disclosure; in that you are essentially publishing a layman's guide revealing the workings as you see it of illusions visible on the Internet. Illusion workers tend to be concerned about such disclosures and exposures. Just some thoughts to ponder.

Lin,
While it is true your access to people who do illusions is limited, the same is true for many other magicians/ illusionists/ creators around the world too. However, especially with today's connected world, asking for opinions and help is quite easy. You already did the first step here! The "problem" of writing an idea book without having any of the illusions tested is that you may not be able to sell any. It would be a pity to spend hours and hours writing a book and no one buys it. To put it in perspective, would you buy a cookbook of recipes from someone who has never cooked before? What I suggest is that you write up 2 - 3 illusions and release them free as a small ebook or publish it on a password protected blog. The password can be something that only magicians will know to protect it from the casual layman who comes across your blog. See what people think of your ideas and get feedback. Since you are not charging for the ideas, it is a fair deal. Based on the feedback, you will be in a better position to know whether your book of ideas will be in demand by the general magic/ illusion community. Hope that helps. J C

Is great idea. Do not need to experience about to write teaching about. Recently I am think about to write and publish new book which includes open heart surgery ideas.
Because of I am not able to make to do surgery (I just have 'researched' surgery using youtube video), so I cannot make exact teaching for cutting chest right, but I believe I have invented(and some-improved) new surgery idea. One of worries I have, is "is this attempt can go over into existing medical association?" So What are you think about this idea? is it good to medicine, or harmful thing? |
