If you have never heard of Kate Bush, you can stop reading this topic, it will not be for you.
If you know who Kate Bush is, and you don't care for her, this topic is not for you. I have no interest in starting an insult war. Kate Bush' last concert was in 1979. She is doing 15 shows starting at the end of August and going into September of this year. Sadly she will not be leaving her home country of England. All her shows are in London. I have loved Kate Bush since 1982. I have ALL her albums; including a couple that I probably shouldn't of demo tapes and unreleased tracks. Can I afford to fly to London? No. Can I take time off at what is sadly the very beginning of my school year? No. Do I even have a current passport? No. Will Kate come to America? Unbelievably doubtful. Will I ever get to see Kate Bush live? Probably not. I am sad.

I am confused - how can a grown man not have a passport?

Tony, I am of the opinion from your web-site that you are from the U.K? In this country a passport is far less important than on your side of the pond. Here a good valid driver's license with a photo on it covers just about all identification needs. This includes check writing, credit card use, and being questioned by local police.
BTW: I am looking forward to reading your book

To be fair, the USA is such a big and beautiful country, you could spend several lifetimes exploring it.
I am truly sympathetic, by the way, although I'm not a huge Kate Bush fan; I understand the feeling. What amused me was that where Kate Bush and I live, being "bummed" by someone means something rather rude... (And in Kate's case would probably involve strapping something on...) |

She never toned down her Britishness to universalize her appeal. Etc or so it says.

And I know the USA has a huge amount to explore, and would take several lifetimes to do so. But to not even own a passport denies you even the possibility of getting out, even if it is only across the border to Canada or Mexico. The reality is I don't travel as much as I want to, but the passport is always there, always ready for the next stamp. The mindset here is that the world is our playground. The mindset in America seems so different. Sometimes it surprises us. Who knows - maybe Kate Bush has an American gene in her makeup, and doesn't have a passport either. That might be why she won't travel!

That statistic staggers me. I have met plenty of Americans, and have formed a high opinion of the race on that basis. But the Americans I meet are the ones who travel. The fact that two thirds of the nation don't own a passport does seem to indicate a mindset that America is all you need, and you don't need to go beyond the borders. In Europe we see things differently. I don't believe I know anyone who does not possess a passport.

A passport is far different. You can travel and see many cultures without even leaving New York City, or Chicago or Miami. Spain itself is the size of California. You are comparing apples to hand grenades. You seem to suffer from the very thing you seem to think Americans have. Short sight.

Most people have a passports in England because because the of crap weather here. They like to escape to warmer climes now and again, to places like California for example. A lot of the old folk go abroad for the winter as it is cheaper than staying home and paying the exorbitant fuel bills here. Spain in the winter is full of of our old folk as their winter is not far off our summer. Least in the USA you can travel to warmer places within it but here you can not escape the bad weather unless you have a passport. The most popular holiday places are places with sunshine. About 30% don't passports here because they they can't afford one.
You can't get in a casino without passport or open a bank account here now. A lot people get a passport just for ID reasons.

Right, now we Americans are all clear on the British passport situation....
So, anyone want to talk about Kate Bush and her upcoming concert that I won't be seeing?
