I would also like to take this opportunity to praise Harris. He has been terrfic throughout this thread and other ones that are no longer with us. He has sent me encouraging pm's on several occasions, and has always been a true gentleman, unlike some on here. He was raised a Jew, attended Unity Church for a while(where I go), and I respect the fact that at this present stage of his spiritual journey he is more focussed on the fundemantel teachings laid out in the bible. He is a good man. I hope to have the opportunity to meet him one day. JR

Marcus seems to have got himself in a bit of a state about my 'suggestion' to start this thread. It was actually a tongue in cheek remark born out of frustration and annoyance that 27 pages of debate and all the time and effort that had gone into it had been removed just because one or two people weren't happy with how it was going. Then another thread was moved to the Gospel section, again for the same reasons. What I'd actually gone on to the other forum to do was to answer Roger's question about the things that disturbed me at the Christian convention I lectured at, because I knew there was no way I could post it here. There was no evil plot going on, nor are we a group of atheists - Roger believes in anything irrational that comes his way! I didn't expect anyone to actually start this topic and you will note that until now, I stayed out of it. Nor do I post in the Gospel section of the Café and antagonise the people who post in there.

What am I’m supposed to do, take my children to church on Sunday with their ears plugged? For the record, I’ve ‘exposed’ my five children to God at a young age and they have all rejected it to some degree when their ‘critical thinking skills’ kicked in. Or as I would put it, when they saw what the world has to offer.

Ken, my kids have been exposed to atheism from a similarly young age. I don't think anyone (certainly not me) is suggesting we isolate kids from their parents beliefs, unless their parents are bonkers (Westboro Baptist bonkers). Some of us are saying that we should limit the exposure outside of the home until kids have reached the age of critical thinking. Inside the home kids learn from their parents, and unless their parents are jerks, that is a good thing.

It would be good for people to lighten up. Personally, I wasn't sure if the intention of this thread was genuine or not. The timing was certainly suspect. However, I had some ideas so I offered them. I do think that trying to bait people into an argument is different from trying to have a discussion. Discussion of opposing views can be a useful thing, and helpful as it can challenge our thinking. Even if we don't agree it can make us understand what we believe even better, as well as helping us understand others. Finding truth, even if it is different from what you already believe, is a worthwhile effort. I certainly have no complaints about this thread or its intentions.

I had no knowledge of any previous argument or thread and my last post was because I thought the question was genuine and I wanted to help. I feel like such a fool now for actually responding to the initial question.

To be honest, even if this thread was a set up, we thought about the question and some useful replies were posted. So no loss.

If you are willing and can spare a few moments, I'd be interested to hear more about that. PM if fine with me since it is about your family. If not, no worries and I would respect that. But I am interested. My wife feels pretty strongly that we should keep talk on religion to the minimum so that they have the freedom to explore if they choose. Raising "atheists" is certainly not a goal. I prefer to be more open and direct but I think she has a good point so I'm not so direct as I might have been otherwise. Obviously, things have a way of coming out and children are smart in picking things up. |

Incidentally, I have heard from Dave Shribner that one of the reasons my thread about the Jinn was removed was that the original link to the Lutheran Blog no longer worked, so that meant that the thread did not make so much sense. Apparantly the mods still have it, and are doing some cleaning up, so hopefully it will return. By and large I thought it was very civil, and there were wonderful contributions from all sides. Obviously it was an extremely popular thread judging by the number of posts made by members of The Little Darlings. JR |

True some of those who responded didn't know what was going on, but that doesn't change the fact of why this thread was started to begin with. I suggest it be deleted. I am offended that that my views about religion not be allowed yet a thread can be started to poke fun at that. I ask that it be deleted Tom

FYI...
I don't feel used. As someone said....I can't adjust the wind...only my sail. It is fun to come with ideas for other artistic entertainers. Sometimes it is easier, than sitting down and writing for Dr. Laugh. Today, I have my planet tie on. One of our great science teachers, commented they were talking about the Solar System. I quipped that perhaps she, me or we could write a song about it. She shared back, that she used to work with a science teacher that did just that. Kudos to those that make science and things like history cool and interesting. Science I always got. I was president of my high school biology club. History took a bit longer, before I realized it wasn't boring. I just had boring teachers that didn't plant seeds. Or perhaps my garden was to rocky. Anyone know if science guy Spangler has anything on Evolution. First thing that popped in my mind was a parody of the Beatles song Revolution. Musicians you may start your brain engines. I actually hold the opinion that these sorts of debates, discussions, arguments... here, in the kids entertainers section of The Magic Café, aren't helpful in any way. Really, I don't.
Spin it positive all you want, but has anyone changed their position in the slightest? Has anyone improved their act? Probably not. Has anybody gotten angry, nasty, snide, condescending, mean? Has anybody said things they regret? I've read this thread and the deleted one too. I haven't changed what I believe in the slightest. But my opinion of some people has changed a bit. Not for the better either (I already knew Harris was a good, sincere and helpful person). Where's the benefit? |

On Mar 27, 2014, Scott Burton wrote I’d be glad to expand upon it Scott. Besides, I’m sure this thread will be deleted anyway. LOL. We are Christians and live a Christian live style. We pray at the table, have family devotions, go to church on Sundays, etc. I never felt like we were shoving our religion down their throats or brain washing them, its just how we lived. When the kids got to be a certain age and started choosing their own beliefs we encouraged them to see the all the good in choosing the Christian lifestyle, but never demanded it. Only one child has outright rejected God and feels the whole thing is silly. The other four accept it, or tolerate it, but are not very enthusiastic about it. We still love them just as they are and have a good relationship with them all. And of course, we still pray for them every day. I’m not trying to adjust your opinion, its just I’ve heard some atheists liken bringing up children as Christians to child abuse, and they will be wounded for life if exposed to the Bible at a young age. I felt the need to correct that misunderstanding. I will never regret taking the time to teach my children the way Jesus taught us to live.
