This is not good.... the box looks like a toy... terrible.. such a shame..
IMO the box should of stayed the same , and maybe just made the gimmick a-bit “stronger” , so it could be examined 100% by the spectator without the risk of the method being exposed...
hey guys !!!... looking forward to joining this community.. some WILL hate me.. some MAY love me ... enjoy !!!...

I must get this new version, is there much preparation, short sleaves, sorry but I am new to close up. I am a kids entertainer putting some close up together, don't usually like card tricks, but this looks great.

I think the original looked better, and Regal's Clarity Box really took this concept to the next level IMHO.

This is awesome that you can now change out the gimmick!!!!
I don't mind the look at all. Your audience won't care either if you perform it right! They should be saying "how the heck did you do that'! and NOT say "Well, that was a good trick I guess, but is that box plastic?" Yes, your magic buddies and yourself may want wood, but that's not the magic. I agree that you have a choice, and maybe you don't like the look. But think of the fact that you can use whatever you want in this. Just like Magic Wagon. They make unbelievable pieces that are beyond beautiful. However, the effects themselves aren't always that impressive. We love them (and the FAST shipping!!), but the auidience is what truly matters. For collectors, this might not be for you. I am excited that John has done this and is continuing his awesome contribution to magic by improving and releasing this! I am going to save up. This is now on my list! Mike |

I guess you could try slapping some wood contact paper over it if the look is a concern for you- as long as it sticks flat, should solve the concern... but then that's added arts and crafts

The Mystery Box is great, and it is a bit smaller...but I don't think either one of them is the type of thing you carry in your pocket, and either one will fit in a close up case. Because of how fair the Clarity Box looks, I've never had anyone ask to examine it. |

Mystery Box is clearly better for close-up/walkaround. Small and easily reset. Clarity box is much bigger and heavier and not as pocket friendly.

Aye the wooden version looks better, that's something very natural about a wooden box (i.e not a lot that can be gaffed about it). I was re-watching Larry Davidsons Scripted Insanity last night and was reminded of how great his routine Big Mystery was.
On the plus side the emptying of the box to show the card on the trailer looks good! |

The new Mystery Box, I agree with many others, looks odd -- like a magic-kit item, or a toy.
Kohler's Lighting Box is a pretty good example of how to make a "plastic" box look reasonably normal and not prop-y. (It resembles a little box to hold cufflinks, paperclips, trinkets, or whatever.) You can adapt it to use any kind of playing card, currency, billet, etc. There's room in the box for other items (e.g., coins) that appear to tumble out with the signed card, a nice visual convincer. However, spectators can't pick it up and examine it -- which isn't a problem from my perspective, since the switch looks so fair and attention goes to whatever just "fell" out of the box. I'm sure there's a niche for many designs of Kennedy's Mystery Box, which is a fantastic creation. I don't care for the new one, but no doubt some magicians will. Jerry |

I agree with jerdunn.
A few years ago I used the mystery box 1 for my close-up gigs. Last year I changed my bicycle decks for the phoenix decks. Unfortunately I couldn't use the mystery box any more so I bought Kohler's lighting box (which is awesome). When I saw the add for the new mystery box I thought "great I can use this prop again", but when I saw the picture : no way I'm gonna use this. Sorry John I love the previous box but this one doesn't meet my standards as far as magic props is concerned. |

I agree with Jerry. Maybe if he just gets rid of the gray lid and gray button and makes it all black. That would be much better IMO

Just purchased one of the originals in exotic Ziricote. Absolutely beautiful dark hardwood with beautiful dark and light grain pattern. I hope John considers making a limited run of the new version in exotic wood.

I received mine a couple days ago and I really like it! I have the older wood box (which is very nice) but decided to try performing with the new one. The reactions are great just like the wood box and no one so far has been suspicious of the new box. I really like the ornament on the front as it allows me to orient the box properly when I set it down, and also when I dump out the card or bill. This box is very thick and sturdy held together by screws and the gimmick is really, really hard to spot by a spectator. Also, the gimmick is very durable and easy to replace with a card, bill, or paper prediction. Spectators seem to like the new modern box. Has anyone else got this and performed with it? I'm curious about your experience.

All black and no button sounds like a winner to me.
Unless the button is necessary? As-is it's a tough trade-off between looks and configurability. |
