Hey, all. While buying a new car and writing out a check, I was wondering about things that we buy that cost a lot. For the average person, a house purchase is probably the biggest expenditure you make in a lifetime; the next biggest is the car(s) you buy that get replaced now and then.
My wife and I are both musicians, and depending on the instrument, a good instrument may cost more than your car(!). Are there other purchases the average (non-rich) people make, that rival house/car expenditures? Larry |

Well I think an instrument is like a small business ivestment and a lot of people put money into a small business.

Boat. My ex has splashed out on one. I want a camper van. And a Honda Goldwing. They will be the big purchases.
Some people invest in a race horse. That can be pricey.

Cosmetic surgery. They spend a lot trying to look like me.
A tomb. My pyramid is costing a furtune.

A cruise to Antarctica on a luxury ship.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I spend most of my big money on travel. I go to the States once or twice per year, and to Hong Kong once per year, and I usually take my son.
On the other hand, I don't own a car, so it evens out. |

I spent ten grand training as a boxer then travelling to New York for a few fights. Great fun, though.

Interesting answers! The point about weddings is well made - I play music for a lot of weddings, and there's a lot of costs involved. You'd don't really take anything away except the memories - it's the biggest party most folks put on for themselves in their whole lives, possibly (big generalization there, sorry).

Or a divorce can cost you half of all you own!
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.
