To Motown: I have Good Ol' Freda queued on Netflix and I have heard it's a great documentary so thanks man for the reminder!
To Barry Gitelson: I am such a baseball fan that it's the only sport I follow - and rabidly. The knuckleball is a fascinating pitch and it's hoot to watch hitters flail at it and to hear catchers' comments on catching it. I'll have to see if it's available on Netflix Thank you for that tip! And back to music documentaries, I watched a wonderful one the other night on BBC4 titled Don't Stop. It's a documentary about Fleetwood Mac told from their perspective and goes all the way back tothe Peter Green and Bob Welch days into the present just before Christine McVie decided to rejoin the band. Anyhow, it's a really fascinating look into the struggles, triumphs, excesses, and disappointments of this legendary band. Well worth a look! |

I watched this one last night. This documentary concerns the medical staff who dealt with the survivors of 9/11. Apparently, it was only first aired last year. We already know the heroic efforts of the Police, Fireman and Port Authorities, now there are new heroes to add to the list .
Footnote: Not for the faint hearted if medical procedures bother you.(There are one or two graphic visuals). However, the main story is regarding the little hospital located 4 blocks away from the Towers in Manhattan and how they dealt with emergency patients. This hospital was not on the list to deal with patients in the event of a national disaster, but other hospitals were unable to get their ambulances there. As a result, with only six operating rooms they became the main triage center. Very interesting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRw8HkwwLVw |

One of my all time favorite documentaries is "When We Were Kings" which chronicles the events leading up to and including the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" between Ali and Frazier.

I've been listening to the Joe Rogan podcast, which has got me interested in stand-up comedy a bit.
I REALLY like Jeryy Seinfeld's documentary "Comedian." Joan River's documentary was good too.

My wife and I watched a documentary/movie last night called Downfall, produced in Germany in 2004 about the last days of Hitler in his bunker, watching his world collapse. It was much more interesting than we thought it would be; in fact it was riveting. It's based on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, a young secretary who worked with Hitler in the bunker, and escaped when the Russians entered Berlin. It's subtitled in English and it clearly shows Hitler's rage and madness. I highly recommend it. The acting is superb on all counts and the gent portraying Hitler is most convincing. It's two and a half hours long and we thought it might drag, but there wasn't a dull moment.

I rented it on Netflix. One thing I always do after renting a Netflix DVD or streaming anything is rate it. I've rated a couple of hundred movies and TV series by now and the system is very intuitive about recommendations for me. Downfall was in fact, a Netflix recommendation.

I've watched several (A Letter to Zachary, Thin Blue Line, American Movie, The Queen of Versailles, Catfish, Exit Through The Gift Shop) of the twelve listed here.
http://louistheroux.com/twelve-terrific-documentaries/ They were all very good. Also, I just watched and quite enjoyed 'Bernie': http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1704573/ It may or may not technically count as a documentary, but Bernie was based on a real story and the movie (is said to have) led to the early release just last week of the real life convicted killer it (more or less) tells the story of (something I did not know of until just a few minutes ago). Orson Welles's 1974 "F is for Fake" is excellent. He called it a "film essay" rather than a documentary.
