I did for about 10 years or so through out the Southeast. Loved it and would like to get back into doing some more.

I have not done a whole lot, and have enjoyed the ones I do.
As a person who works in the schools, I see administrators review P.R. information from entertainers. Budgets over the years have changed as has the requirements needed in programs to get entry into the schools. Having a background in Mental Health, Substance Abuse,(working in the field and education) as well as Theatre, Magic and Puppetry is a great combination. Lately I have been doing smaller repeat programs in Media Centers and even classrooms. Last Friday I did 7 - 20 minute programs. Boy was I tired at the end of the day. 25 years ago it would not have been such a drain. "Nigel" and I loved it. Currently I have two hats. Under one I occassionally do programs under a County Grant. On the other I am a "freelancer" The programs under the grant are part of my work with the school district. My main job is to do individual, group and crisis intervention work. During some periods of the year I combine Magic with a Message. It helped me be recognized as the 2002 COMBAT Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist of the Year in the County. Enjoy sharing the Magic. I remember when I was a young child and a magician came to my school. The only effect that I can remember that he did was The Zombie. Out of all the effects he performed...that one stood out.
Just a thought. ~~Rob~~

Last fall, that's what I was doing, pretty much full time. I have several shows booked for this spring and my October 2004 calendar is nearing capacity. My school show is an anti drug show (October is the month for Red Ribbon Weeks here in Illinois), so that's why it's so full.

Hi Musicalsongwriter,
In my school district this is how it works to get your name available to the various schools. Every year the district puts out a booklet and delivers them to all the schools in the area. My particular area has 100 elementary schools and aprox 30 high schools. No performer can do a show at a school unless they are in the booklet. The district has pre-screened the shows beforehand and those deemed suitable are accepted. Usually a glossy photo of the performer is included along with a bio and description of the show. Individual schools decide which entertainer to hire. Based on that info, the school, depending on what they are trying to expose the students to will choose the most suitable entertainer. It may be exposing the children to Ethnic or Cultural activities, Say no to Drugs or something like Self Esteem Issues or Bullying. Every district is different on how they choose their performers and what issues are important to them. Good Luck! |

Schools were my primary market for many years and it can be an excellent one to work for many reasons, however, the market has been changing in recent years. Anti-drug shows were popular in the 1980's. Reading was big in the 1990's (although there will always be a market for a reading show, if only at libraries). Conflict resolution and anti-bullying seem to be big now.
Because of more schoolwide assessments (No Child Left Behind) schools are less open to taking time away from classroom instruction, so your program has to have a strong curriculum tie-in. That's the key. I was involved in doing three seminars on the topic along with three other top pros in the business, and we are planning another one this summer before the Kidabra conference. Visit http://www.magicsuccessseminars.com for information on school shows. Good luck. |
