Hello! I have an Egg bag that I'm happy with but it begins to have seen its best days. It's not a Malini but what I heard, it is called having a long Japanese pocket. Anyone want to tell me where I can find this?
It is no small hole in it, the whole of one wall is open down to the bottom of the bag! (Not zipper bag) Awesome if anyone knows where it can find. //Steffs35 |

This SOUNDS like a description of the OLD classic egg bag. --And, I must plead ignorance regarding anyone who currently makes one! Everyone that I know is using the Miller/Malini or the Sterling/Mardo style bag.
You might try ABBOTT'S MAGIC. Greg has several seamstresses, who could make one of the old style bags. I would suggest that you try using the Sterling/Mardo bag. You can vanish the egg with the bag inside out! (Senor Mardo's idea) Dick Oslund (another Scandinavian)

This bag is the traditional Japanese version...It's all about producing up to 5 eggs, unlike the western version of the trick which includes vanishes. The shape of the bag is significant: the proportions are exactly those of a Kimono sleeve! The bag is shown empty with some very fluid gestures ,and then an egg shape is seen in the corner of the bag,the egg is removed and ultimately4 more eggs are produced.
At one time, I had two of these bags (one was made for me by Shigeo Takagi's wife!). It was featured in the performances of many notable Japanese performers and Maki Kitami included it in his lecture notes. If you find the notes , you can learn from the pictures... which are quite detailed. The illustrations are by Ton Onosaka and he knows how to illustrate magic effects! I would probably write to Magicland (Ton Onosaka"s shop) in Japan and see if they still have Kitami's notes. The bag could be constructed from the information in the notes and the handling as well. Making the bag is easier than sewing up a Malini. Regards- J.Neal

Thanks for the answers, perhaps the easiest to go to someone who is good at sewing and getting an exact copy of it in the same type of cloth. Is the name on the bag otherwise The Japanese Egg Bag egg bag if I should try googling me to someone who has it?

The bag was made out of silk (polyester would work too) rather than cotton...So in that sense, it's like a Kimono rather than a Yukata (Japanese bath Robe).
I Recall that the outside is a different color than the inside...like a silk lined kimono. All the visible stitching on the outside was done by hand in what we would call a basting stitch. It was done intentionally for aesthetic effect. The pocket was able to hold 5 eggs (hollowed out) and the mouth of the opening was sewn with elastic thread so that you had to gently squeeze the egg free. Regards- J.Neal

Dick!
Consider it my debt to you....partially paid! I've been following your responses and comments on Miser's Dream and the appropriate pail, glass, etc;. You remind me of my late dear friend, Charlie Miller: lots of opinion, nearly always right, and a man who has done 'it' for real people , rather than just talk about it. I salute you! Regards- J.Neal

I made my first bag, which had a pocket that almost went all the way to the bottom, based on an illustration ion Amateur magician's Handbook. It was felt and made when my hands were smaller. When it wore out I made a replacement with was larger and used some black corduroy with gold pinstripes on it. I still use that bag in my kids show. Yu could vary easily make on yourself or have someone who sews make one for you using your old bag as a pattern. There are advantages to other bags, like the Malini which I prefer for adult audiences, so also consider this as an opportunity to try out other styles.
