Once you come to the facedown card do you stop there or do you keep fanning the cards ?

I used to stop, but most of the time someone would ask about the rest of the deck, so I ended up showing them anyway. Now I just keep fanning.

I keep fanning. Right after the spectators see a face-down card, they two unanswered questions in the spectator's mind:
1.) Are there are any other facedown cards? 2.) Is that really the card I thought of? Our job is to answer both of them. After you fan the rest of the cards to show all of the others face up, they only have #2 unanswered as opposed to #1 and #2. Leaving the spectator wondering if there are any other face up cards after you reveal the thought of card weakens the effect. (Not to say that that would not be a strong effect even if you don't fan…but we should get the best effect out of the ID as possible.) Zack Johnston |

I keep fanning, adding "as you can see, the only face down card..."

I like to keep fanning as well. This is also useful if you happen to miss the card you're looking for. Sometimes I "accidentally" miss it on purpose.

It's vital to fan all the way through as Zack has pointed out. But I do not show the fan for an extended amount of time. I stick face down card out of the fan a little, fan through and then close it almost entirely. You don't want to have people staring at the cards.

Since there are only 26 cards being displayed because of R&S, you don't want your spectators to notice that. Now I said don't let your spectators view the whole MOTIONLESS deck for more than 6 seconds. Astute spectators can tell that the amount of cards you have is less than half a deck when all the cards are still. Thus, you should display the deck and keep it moving (spreading back and forth) for more than 6 seconds. The amount of time you spend displaying the faces really is up to you. Some performers like to take their time and build lots of suspense. Some like to get right into the reveal. I believe that taking your time to build suspense is necessary to get the full potential out of your ID. I find that spreading and showing the face up cards twice is just enough to emphasize that there is ONE face down card. (Spread through, square. Spread through, square. And don't rush the process.) Interesting thought as I've never even considered not continuing to fan in order to show the entire deck.
Granted, I do usually skip the last couple cards as those are prone to separate very easily, but the specs feel as if they've seen the whole deck. Doesn't make sense that you wouldn't show that it is the only reversed card IMHO. I mean what if their card happened to be near the top of the deck, you're not going to show the rest of the cards? |

Besides the basic turned down card. What other effects can be done with an invisible deck. I don't have much experience with gaffed decks. I try and work solely on sleights so everything can be examined

Hi TravisNye
Darwin Ortiz has an excellent effect called Do As I Did, P140 in Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table. This uses an Invisible Deck and S* S*****ns set up. I do it regularly and it gets great reactions. PM me if you would like more details. All the best Michael |

Deck Order Question
I purchased Dan Harlan's Giant Inv Deck just a month ago from Penguin Magic. Very cool but the deck order seems so obvious when you fan out the deck. I have a pretty poor memory...i think... I'm just wondering if anyone has a deck order that looks random but is pretty easy to use. Thanks Steph

If you are newer to an ID the key is remembering (memorizing) the harder card pairs - for me 8 is 5, 9 is 4, J is 2 and Q is A. These need to be 2nd nature. I don't like doing the big overhead fan - I prefer a nice and slow face down spread. Good luck Steph. As you know this is one of the most powerful effects possible.

The BIG invisible deck is really nice because as you fan it, you can 'see' the selected card and separate it during the fan.
I agree with you using a smaller deck though. Thanks

I'm now also using cardsharks Parlour size deck as my ID. Larger size but I'm personally not a jumbo card guy as they look too big for me.
The power of ID having done it hundreds if not thousands of times is the clean spread and the ordinary nature of the cards. I know jumbos look good on stage but real people don't use jumbo cards do they? So they then look like another magic prop. This then takes iD into the magic trick realm rather than a feat of mind reading or influence - which is my persona. Different strokes.

I keep fanning also. I tend to also set up my ID so that the more commonly selected cards are closer to the middle of the deck. It looks great when you fan open the entire deck and the selected card is almost in the middle.

I spent some time setting my ID up so that it looks very random even though there's actually a decent amount of thought gone into it. You definitely want to have the least likely chosen cards at the top and bottom - as nathangesig states, it's a more powerful effect the closer the chosen card is to the centre of the deck. Spades and hearts are generally more chosen than clubs or diamonds. Also it's not a bad idea to have similar looking cards (eg. 8 & 9 of clubs or two red court cards) at the top and the bottom, just in case you accidentally open the box the wrong way up - as soon as you see the wrong index on the top card you can spin the deck over the right way and carry on the effect. With two similar cards at each end there's less chance of the spectator spotting your mistake.
