Hi guys. Just thought I'd post with my new website. Please bear in mind that it is quite basic and some of it, such as the video at the start - using some old footage. It is my first attempt at a website, just wanted to hear some of your thoughts.
Thanks

I think it would be better if your homepage video was of you performing mentalism, rather than a coin through bottle and other stuff...

Actually, I think the exact opposite -- I think that the use of "mentalism" should be downplayed.
Congratulations on the new site. I hope it brings you much success. The only feedback I can really provide is that it seems to have a bit of a split personality. Your site basically tells me that you are a magician who saw Derren Brown so you want to be a mentalist, but you essentially continue to do the magic that you've always done, although you now throw in some mental magic into the mix. I think that message is a bit muddled for your potential clients. My guess is that people coming to your site are probably looking for a fun and entertaining guy to hire to do some magic. Your web address says magic. The description of your act (cards disappearing) is magic. I think you are doing yourself a disservice by trying to re-frame everything as "mentalism". Being a magician is an awesome thing. Embrace it. |

Thanks for the response guys - yea the link is http://www.clellandmagician.com
As I said, it is my first attempt at a website. I don't have that much in terms of footage/photos - mostly older stuff when I used to perform more magic. I have procrastinated for ages about getting a website up - not enough time, not enough good media etc - thought I'd just do it and get it up and running and then edit it as I go. I agree, it is a bit mixed. I no longer perform that much magic at all and to be honest the footage is rather ropey. I will try to get more footage done and edited together soon showing more mentalism effects. I still do some card stuff - but again strickly mentalism based. Thanks for the responses.

The website is very pretty. But if you want to be known as a mentalist, the website is hurting you. It's thoroughly branded as a website for a "wedding magician/party magician." It talks about your years of practicing sleight-of-hand. The words "sleight" and "magician" don't belong on a mentalist's website!

Yup - drop the video altogether... even if you film yourself speaking about what you do now, and what you can offer...nicely/moodily shot - then that would be far better...
a personal greeting is far better than some footage that doesn't fit in with the overall idea...but make it short and to the point... ideally, just a good quality photo, and some decent intro text will do...

I agree with many of the comments - nice looking site but I don't think "Magician of the Mind" really describes what you offer.
You should correct the grammatical error on the About Me page, i.e., to "when he first saw". Mike |

David,
The site looks very nice. If I may, a couple of suggestions... 1/ For new footage: Go to the mall (or whatever they call them in Scotland), have someone follow you with a camera and perform for strangers. Not an original idea, but it works. Also, if they have open mic nights in your neck of the woods, get up and perform and get some footage. 2/ If it were me, I would take out the bit about Derren, channel 4 and videos and books. As a potential client, I'm interested in where you have performed and under what circumstances. With that being said, the site really does look great. Good luck with all your performances! Scott

I would also consider renaming your stand up show to a stage stage or cabaret show. For the general UK public the words stand up generally implies a comedian rather than a magician or mentalist. The other implication is that the audience would be standing to watch the show.

Yep I'm on that going to quickly film n cut together a few mentalism effects - won't be perfect but your right.
In regards to billing myself as a mentalist. Had this conversation before, the market in the UK is big for weddings. A mentalist is an unknown thing here - so easier for clients to find you and get idea of what I do if I mention magician. I know some mentalists like to keep magic away from mentalism as much as possible. But in my view, unless I was wanting to workas a medium or do psychic parties then I don't have a problem mixing them. I would never perform pure magic tricks then switch to using mentalism for tricks. Rather, I am billing myself as an entertainer who acheives the effect of mind reading through psychology and other means. That being said, I agree I should remove refs to sleight of hand and tighten up description of what I do.

Ok website completely updated. Added to intro promo video and a videos page with me performing some effects. Please have a look and comment. Due to constraints with getting footage all video was performed at my home. Hope you like some of the effects.

Hi David - I'm not sure if this is still a work in progress, but just in case.....
You do know that you can't have that video of you performing at home, don't you? Sorry if you already have plans to change it, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Oh, and please don't put that you are ready to perform "in the UK and the rest of the world". Just my 2p worth. |

It is a Bit of wirk in progress. I don't see why I can't have the video to be honest. Care to elaborate?

Just my opinion but it's really unprofessional. It's you doing a few tricks at home. How will that make the booker want to hire you?

Hi David!
A nice looking website but I think there are still some things to consider: 1.) I'm afraid Rolyan is right. Your videos are quite unprofessional. Do yourself (and your participant) a favour and don't use them. Just wait until you have some clips showing you in front of a real audience doing a real show. As a first step you should go to a local photographer. Invest in 4 - 6 well made photos. That would be a wise investment and not as expansive as you might think. A few good photos will bring you much more bookings than many blurry videos shot in someone's living room. 2.) I don't know how it is handled in the UK, but I think you may be not allowed to use this music for your demo reel. (It's from the Inception soundtrack, isn't it?) Think about copyrights! 3.) Rolyan is right again. Don't use this line: "He is available to perform magic and mind reading throughout the UK and the World." Your material is not (yet ) showing a world-traveling professional, so this part goes just over the top. 3.) Please, please, PLEASE delete this part: "David got interested in magic when he first seen Derren Brown on Channel 4. After seeing this..." I don't want to be harsh but this text passage means in other words: "David is a Derren Brown copycat. He is watching a lot of TV and is not that long in the business" Just delete this part. Be the first David Clelland not the second Derren Brown! Tell your potential clients about the incredible things YOU can do and the incredible person YOU are. Do not compare yourself with other (bigger) performers. Not even indirect. It's a sure-fire way to hurt yourself. Good luck with your website! Meng |
