I'm thinking of using mine with Outlaw's Ash. Maybe playing the game drove the little girl over the edge.

Consider using Carlyle's Spirit Music Box as a creepy way to connect to those poor lost little souls.

I also am awaiting my ASH to see how this will flow into ASH, perhaps by using the blank game card on the final reveal of the game turned to reveal childlike crayon writing that says something Iike either "I am here" or "Believe" and signed by the child, ASH (or whatever name Rick/OA has used in the latter prop/routine).

Tested it out on a couple magician friends Friday with good results. Fine tuning the performance with each presentation. Today I performed this and another effect for some non-magician friends. The performance adjustments worked as hoped in generating the surprise "how did it know?" response I was going for. The devil themes I present with a bit of playful whimsy as I prefer not to leave anyone seriously spooked. All agreed that the Kn*wing Game was their favorite. So far everyone I've presented it to has bought completely into the idea that the set was an authentic game from WW II, even my magician friends.

I've been exchanging email with Steve, the creator of The Kn*wing Game, discussing performance tips and ideas. One of the topics we discussed was on defining who the spectator was playing again and the criteria for them to win (an impossible task, but they don't know this yet). Something I had not clearly defined in my first two test performances. In the next two performances I decided to frame it as if they were playing against me, each time they failed to land on a token, that token became mine. As the game progressed I assume the character of "the man by the railroad tracks." In contrast Steve likes to frame it as the spectator against the game. I thought Steve's response would be helpful to other users of The Kno*wing Game. With his permission, below is his response describing how he frames the challenge for the spectator. I'll give this a try the next time I use it. Steve also mentioned that he has a few sets left, and confirmed that 23 would be it. No more after that.
From Steve: "I like your approach of "collecting tokens" what a great way to explain it. I usually state to my spec. that they are playing against the game, sort of like Jumanji, and that it knows how and where they will move. I tell them to try to outwit the Game. Most spec. are very familiar with the Jumanji reference. Also I make sure to add the part about "Once the game begins it cannot be stopped, do you understand?" This is extremely troubling to most people especially if your tone drastically changes while saying it. (I prefer a darker approach). "The fun part about the Game, from the performers side anyway, is it can be played in so many different ways. I recently had a couple sit down with me and I merely shared the Game's historical origins and how children were obsessed with it and how collectible these types of games have become in recent years etc etc. As I spoke I opened the tin and began showing them the components, the cards, disks and game board then lastly the clown. They were very creeped out by it all and felt uncomfortable even holding the clown for more than a few seconds. They read a few of the instruction cards and were horrified that children actually played such a Game. The best part for me was the man said, "This is like something out of a Stephen King novel but real" Those are the moments you live for as a performer! "Approaching it from different angles and seeing how spectators react is a lot of the fun for me, it sounds like you are well on your way to doing just that."

I've had this for a few weeks now and just wanted to post my thoughts on this effect.
I really like the theme, its initially why I bought it. Selling, bartering or playing for your soul I feel is a great theme and one that many can relate to, and is one that runs throughout my years of bizarre magic - as you can see by my avatar I was tricked - I love the folk artiness of this effect very much and the ability to add to it over the years to come will be a fun part of it for me. The props look, smell and feel authentic and are as much as possible. I was in contact with the seller on several occasions and he was gracious enough to modify several things to fit my own story. Definitely one of my more unique hauntiques. Thanks

I found several nice tins today that I'm going to be putting the kn*wing game into. The Tiger tobacco one was actually made by the Cheinco company after the war, the same company who made the clowns. I like it for that reason and because it will fit the game board folded in half. The Greys tin on the left is spooky looking and now holds all the game pieces and the mustard tin I found was full of tiddlywinks so I think I'll put a few wheat pennies in it and add that too. The old tins are being repurposed one will hold my newest aquisition the US Homicide trilogy which is on its way and the other some bits and bobs I have collected. Any way I just wanted to share that.

Thank you Silvertongue. Those are all wonderfully eerie, especially the Tiger tin. That reminds me that I have a small box full of tins, and old new years noise makers that my mother passed on to me. May be something there. Time to open that old box up...

Thanks. I have also been brainstorming the possibility of using the game with Ash from OE. I own both and really feel that there is a creepy connection there. I won't go into it to much now but what if...

I've found this to be a nice piece to perform whenever we're entertaining couples over at our house. Especially if performed before dinner, where it provides an interesting conversation topic on a multiple of levels and sets up a spooky mood for other routines to follow after dinner.

Received my Kn*wing Game in the mail today.
Wow. Really. Wow. A lot of thought went into this. There is no way any spec would think this anything but authentic. And in fact the letter sent along had me chuckling with wicked delight....and then actually a little spooked. I received #13. I think there are 13 left. This is destined to be a highly sought after classic. I post this only as a public service announcement. - Get one. Click here to view attached image. |
