On Apr 20, 2014, SD Houston wrote: Hey SD! Well said! I remember a friend who managed a small factory that manufactured amall parts for the automotive industry. George invited me to tour the factory and see the operation. We walked through the "Research & Development" department first, and saw "on the drawing boards" new concepts being "researched & developed". Then, on to the "Production" department where men actually PRODUCED the small parts. I was fascinated. Then George said something that really hit me. He said, referring to "R&D" department: "Those guys are constantly and continually working to improve what we produce. But, 'every so often' we need to rip those plans off the drawing boards, and use those plans to PRODUCE something! We only make money on what we PRODUCE!" Too often, magicians (especially "new" magicians) get so fascinated with the MOVES they are learning, and trying to improve their performance of those MOVES,that their SHOW stays on the "drawing boards". ONCE THEY HAVE THE "BASICS" DOWN, they should go out and do a few shows. (There are alway worthy groups that have no funds to hire a performer, but they can provide a "place to he lousy in". Sophocles said it a few millenia ago: "One learns by DOING the thing!" Yes, mistakes will be made, but they need to "try their wings". Fritz Kreisler, musician, was asked, "What was your best concert?" He replied, "My NEXT one!" When I look back at my first shows, I cringe! But, I had the strong desire to improve. --and I think that I did. When I was 16, I did a show for a local lodge "ladies night". A member had a "new machine" that could record (audio)my act on a 12" record. He did. I listened to it later, and made some notes! I worked to improve. It took awhile, and a lot more shows. Eventually (through study, practice, TRIAL & ERROR) I was able to "get" an agent, and that was a 'turning point'. Every now and then, I dig out that record, and listen! (It knocks my ego down a peg! It reminds me that, even though I am retired, I must continue to study and practice, etc., because: WHEN YOU ARE THROUGH LEARNING--YOU'RE THROUGH! I stil believe that "There aint no shallow end in this pool. You had better be able to swim before you jump in. But, you don't need to be a gold medal Olympic swimmer. Magicians "suffer" from lack of "direction". Other artists, musicians/actots, especially, work with directors. Magicians, generally, are their own directors. --especially those who "do" magic as a hobby. I mentioned in a post above, Gene Anderson's "method". If more magicians did that, we would see better magicians! I could probably continue this for ten more pages (Egad!) but, I think I've made my point for now.
