What is the name of Doug Atkinson's Website? In other words, how does one get directly to it? (I really am a terrible computer person!)

For those that don't own Apocalypse and can't seem to find them anywhere, they are available as PDFs here:

Apocalypse and Magic Menu are my favorite sets. But I have and love many other books as well and only seen some of the Jinx issues. All have something to offer so for me there is no "better" as all of them have geat information. I leave that kind of talk to 5-year olds fighting at recess.

Yes, it certainly was not my intention to start any squabbling; just offering a personal perspective on a great publication. On that basis, there are no cogent arguments to be had with my original post, just differing personal perspectives.
Good to see that nobody so far has actually been negative about Apocalypse, which speaks volumes in such a polarised community. |

Is the full set of Apocalypse still available anywhere? I'd really love to pick this up.

The hardbound volumes are almost sold out where still available. As I write this, Penguin has Volumes 6-10 & Volumes 16-20 for sale at the best prices I've seen, but you would have to get the others (1-5 & 11-15) from eBay or other used magic outlets. If you're willing to spend extra, you may still be able to find "Collector's Editions" for double the standard version cost.
Of course, if you like e-books, the Conjuring Arts Research Center has each year (1-20) available for $14.99 a piece. Good luck, it's well worth acquiring in any format! |

I have a few Vol. 2 and Vol. 4 left - also have a few of the deluxe collector's editions of all four volumes. Contact me at my personal email address (first one listed under this post) if you're interested. Best - HL.

I just think the tone was childish and nothing more than a biased opinion for whatever reason. But it is all a matter of opinion anyway. But for me they are the best overall set of books I have ever read and I can say that without putting down another product in the process, which is how an "adult" would do it. Judging by many of the posts here I am not sure I would classify many as adults, at least not mentally.

I think it's seriously rude to bring up other magazines in this thread. This is about the awesomeness that is Apocalypse!

All magic is art. It is entertainment, which is an art form. It's not a sporting competition where teams or individuals compete. All art is subjective and all artists have their own style. Therefore what appeals to one spectator may or may not be appealing to another. What makes any entertainer popular is that his/her style appeals to many people. Comparing and bickering over which magician is better is pointless.

Not to mention those who also have a personal agenda against an author and look for any opportunity they can to trash their products simply because they don't like the author. I see that a lot also.

I do think that there is nothing wrong with comparing journals and why they are valuable. And I would add that when journals such as The Jinx, Phoenix, Sphinx, Richard's Almanac, Pentagram, etc., etc. are mentioned it is a compliment and acknowledgement of the value of Apocalypse and all of magic's great journals. That being said, I DO agree that ralphgironda's post was problematic for me at least because he didn't provide an argument for his conclusion. As I had written earlier in this thread, "Raplh Gironda" was one of the many pseudonyms used by Karl Fulves in Pallbearers Review along with others such as Fred Becker (which is quite bizarre as I know the cruise ship magician Fred Becker and they are obviously not the same), Fred Lessor, and others. But, I don't want to derail tomski's thread and I apologize tomski if I have done so. I wish we could celebrate the great wealth of magic offered by Apocalypse and all of the other great journals without getting into the inevitable Café p****** match. Slainte, Vlad |

I've been meaning to pick up the Apocalypse set for years and I think this thread might have pushed me over the edge to do so. Here's my question, though, if I may...
I LOVE going through older books and looking at routines and theories. I love exploring and researching. But I also love performing. So my question is this: Is there anything from Apocalypse that you perform regularly?
TRICK OF THE YEAR: Industrial Revelation, BOOK OF THE YEAR: The Approach, The AIP Bottle, and my new book Scenic 52, can all be found over here: SendWonder.com

I suggest anyone go to the below site to see the contents of Apocalypse Vol. 1-5. Then check out the others on this site.

Some of the finest effects that can be performed on a regular basis. Before I retired I use my Apocolypse volumes for inspiration and and effects for my close up show. John

I have contributed many items to Apocalypse and I do most of them regularly. One of my favorite is “The Invisible Card” which appears on page 2171 of the January 1993 issue.

Jamie, I have been preaching about Apocalypse since I joined the Café. There are quite a few items I have performed regularly and after this unlooked for hiatus from performing will do so again. But to help nudge you over the edge and assure you that there is a safety net below consider the fact that many of the world's greatest magicians contributed magic that they performed regularly and many of these routines have become classics. I have written so many posts about Apocalypse over the years about the journal being a veritable who's who of magic from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. Apocalypse wasn't an underground journal like Ibidem or Epilogue - which by the way though they purposefully not targeted to the "general" magic public, nonetheless contained superb magic that made it to the mainstream. Rather, a huge number of routines published in Apocalypse came from the repertoires of these folks - quite a few who are or have been members here such as Randy Wakeman, Gerald Deutsch, David Regal, Ben Harris, Darwin Ortiz, and many MANY more. Then add in Roth, Paul Harris, Vernon, Marlo, Gertner, Schwarzmann, Hamman, etc. etc. and you really get a sense of the extremely high quality of magic contained within its 2880 pages. Some of the items I have performed include: Poor Man's Monte by Richard Vollmer Inferential C/S Transposition by Curtis Kam Hanging Coins by David Roth Interlaced Vanish by Paul Harris Goody Two Choose by J.K. Hartman Yes Your Can Change Your Mind by David Regal Tearable by Mark Lefler Armchair Bowling by Max Maven Two Shuffles Harry by Bro. John Hamman To Tell the Truth by Gerald Kosky Star Warp by Howard Schwarzmann S.C.A.T. by Greg Eanes Luck of the Draw by David Regal Titan by Andre Robert Master of Aces by John Graham Swirl Assembly and Backfire by Dean Dill Japanese Monte by Wesley James Silver Quick by Derek Dingle and many more including some by a little known dude named Harry Lorayne. At two magic shops where I worked I even told customers who bought Apocalypse that if they didn't like it, I would buy their copies; not ONE ever returned them. And you know Jamie, if I wasn't faced with the terrifying possibility of having to sell almost all of my magic to get out of The Netherlands, I would make the same deal with you. I promise you man that if you dive in you are going to find so many treasures that you will feel as though you hit the magic version of the Publisher's Clearing House giveaway. Slainte, Vlad |
