A small selection of smileys would be sufficient

Waiting for those things to download each and every time I want to post or reply is driving me around the twist, especially as their sometimes slow and gradual appearance can play havoc with my side scroll bar as the whole window resizes to accomodate the new graphics as they appear

When the Café is going slow (which it does sometimes) this can be infuriating

If you want, you can turn the smilies off. Click on the "Edit Preferences" tab up on the top right hand side of the page. You can get a list of the smillies and the associated HTML code from the FAQ page and just save them or print them out and just manually enter them when you want.

Another trick is to just hit the "stop" button to stop the page from loading. Then you can post a reply or do whatever. I use this quite often.

I have cable modem too, and depending on my mood I have them either turned on or off. Hope this helps you out.
