I hear and read fairly regular complaints about how the I.B.M. offers little of value to national and international members. But, I read very few suggestions for improving the situation.
Our devoted I.B.M. leaders have carried the I.B.M. a long way over the years. Quality liability and health insurance, worthy business benefits, a world class magazine, website, and convention are proof of advancement worthy of praise. Yet, this doesn't seem to be enough to excite magicians - especially younger magicians - into joining the national association. What perks, benefits, or improvements would YOU like to see from the I.B.M. to make membership more attractive. Every suggestion and idea is worth considering! Let them flow! Be positive - if you share a criticism, offer a solution. To show that I walk the walk, I'll start this ol' boat rocking! Our Online Memorabilia Store is - in my opinion - stuck somewhere in the '80s, . I don't see a single item that a young person - or even a geezer like myself - would jump at purchasing. The embroidered items are dated and there isn't a single emblazoned smartphone or tablet accessory. I am proud of my I.B.M. heritage and would like to see an updated means of displaying it. The website has a list of Territorial Vice Presidents, our local representatives to the national committee, yet it offers no means for contacting this vital service connection directly. I would like to see each TVP with a direct email link for accessibility. We have the ability to provide individual members with a personal Profile Page, which is a GREAT benefit. Why not add such an opportunity for chartered Rings? Profile pages linked directly to the International Ring Listing could offer a more in-depth look at individual Rings and contacts worldwide. This holds true for each TVP, as well. Visibility and accessibility are key needs for growth. I think it would be beneficial for the I.B.M. to transform itself from a social organization into a performer's guild similar in structure and prestige to Great Britain's Magic Circle. In addition to the prestigious levels of membership longevity offered through the Order of Merlin, I think it would be nice to see levels of skill recognition similar to The Magic Circle. I'm always impressed when I meet a peer with the initials A.I.M.C. or M.I.M.C after their name. Such recognition, in my opinion, would go a long way to legitimizing what we do as a serious performance art. What are your thoughts and ideas? Every thought is fuel for discussion! Skip

Why not survey and ask the "younger magicians" what their preferences may be?

I absolutely agree with the points you've made, Skip.
I have been recently voted my local Ring President (after the unfortunate demise of the standing President earlier this year). I've been trying to find ways to improve my local club and the Brotherhood as a whole. The benefit to form a club website would be invaluable. Right now, we have a small club, and I would like to get the word out, to improve and grow it. Having a landing page where we can advertise ourselves and upcoming events would strengthen us both nationally and locally. It's also one of those "added value" things that would cost the Brotherhood very little money to maintain, since you already have a website. Storage and bandwidth should be pretty cheap. As for TVP - yes, I would like greater access to them. Heck, I didn't even know what the acronym meant until you said it. Does that tell you anything? It would be nice to have greater access up the food chain. Even a once-every-several-years visit to the local ring meeting would be very welcome. Even a virtual "Hey, howzit goin'" email would be nice. Maybe a calendar of regional events would be nice. The only way that I can find out about events and lectures in driving distance is to troll other ring websites in the area. I try to make announcements during my own meeting if I remember to look at them beforehand, but having a central "upcoming events" calendar for each region would be nice. Best wishes.

TVP's, like the rest of us, value their privacy. I wouldn't ever suggest posting their contact information directly, but would encourage either them, or IBM to allow a second address used for this purpose. A "Contact Us" web page with a drop down of the territories would be useful if they don't want to create alternate addresses for everyone.

IBM has a presence on Facebook. I nearly forgot about it because I've NEVER seen it used. I think we need sort of "Social Media" manager assigned to use resources such as Facebook, Twitter, etc... and post frequent announcements about what is going in the magic community. Content can be written in advance, and scheduled to go out once a day or so using something like Hoot Suite.

Can you please provide a link to the official Facebook page? I can't seem to find an *official* IBM page, but the unofficial one is here: http://goo.gl/5hkmwP

Well that's interesting. The photo on that page is of Prof. Tom Beaman, myself, and Pastor Ray Wickham performing the Broken Wand ceremony for dear friend and brother Bill Robinson. I have NO idea how it got there!
Good points, as well. Please keep 'em coming. Maybe we can do some good.

In response, largely because I'm interested in the opinions and preferences of All members (and prospective or reluctant members). There are some brilliant ideas out there and I'm casting my line all over the lake to catch as many as I can ... rather than just one shady section.

Basically, some "official" from IBM needs to form the page by clicking on the "Edit" link in the upper right corner. It's not that hard, and I could help. (I've done a Facebook group for my local Ring.) If you can dredge someone up that's official to be the sponsor.

AHA! Thanks! That makes some sort of weird computer-generated pry-into-our-business sense!
Would the Chairman of the TVP Nominating and New Ring Coordination Committee qualify? I think I know a guy ...

Upon reading further, it seems that Facebook page was auto-generated from users with similar interests. It's likely it was NOT created by anyone at IBM.
But if not it should be... I think someone just mentioned a few posts above mine that it's as easy as clicking on "Edit" and create a real page out of what they generated. UPDATE: I didn't click on the shortened goog.le link. It's the cautious part in me that won't allow me to click on something until I know where it goes.

You specifically addressed younger magicians in your original post. I addressed that specific concern. If you want to cast your line for opinions all over the lake that's fine. I would no not overlook shady areas. If you want to know know what the concerns of younger magicians are, you would be better off addressing them specifically. If you want to cast everywhere, accept what you get. Don't ask for input if you are not willing to consider.

Whoa, Hou ... I'm just asking for ideas out of my own curiosity and a desire to help advance interest in the I.B.M. I welcome input from every age, skill, and social group.

To me, what is important about a club is to allow members to do what they want to do (magic), without a lot of other "stuff" getting in the way. Magicians don't want bureaucracy, just a place to practice and learn magic.
Keep it simple. KJ |
