I know there is a lot of tips and topics on people routines already but I was hoping to get some thoughts and help with my routine. Quick background I perform frequently at all types of venues but have my first street festival coming up in a month. I have busked on the street before but always was in front of a business and always was limited in space. The festival I am at has a ton of room where I am performing and feels more like a stage or parlor setting. All the effects I list I am very comfortable with and perform quite often. Also the routine I outline assume I already have a crowd and the festival wants the show to be 20-25 minutes
Routine: Bill Abbott 5 card repeat with abbotts box Egg bag or drawing dupe w/book test Daryls Cards across Bill to lemon No Tear Newspaper Other effects I am thinking of using instead: Smart ass (celebrity version) Kurostoke Phone book test (similar to book test but uses 5 people) Once again any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Derek |

Street magic is about Visuality. so people get triggerd by what they see - then what you say then what you do. if I look at your list I would choose:
1) bill abbott 5 card repeat 2) no tear newspaper 3) egg bag do you use one or 2 specatators - depending on the routine / my suggestion use one, a child this will get you easy 20 minutes. now make up your mind how you want to get te crowd. make some noise - lay out a rope / or make a chalk line all kinds of interaction and jokes possible. tell the audience you are going to do a show. interact with them and show interest in them. you can do a small trick like vanishing a ball or produce a card fan behind the ear of a child. stiff rope is good to0. quick and visible. i would stay a way from the mental stuff. this is a new experience for you and doing mental tricks on the street needs some experience. make it easy for yourself and have fun with the audience. |

I agree with Robert on the mentalism. You want visual, involvement with the audience, and funny.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it also does a card to wallet work well in this environment or too small?

Ton of room could be a problem. people may stand back and not want to be drawn in. To combat this I would pull the first crowd in tight and do something small and fun like sponge balls. Then set these guys as you first two rows. Also make it clear it a faimly show you don't want to became the kids show / babysitter (Kids don't carry the cash)
This summer was my first real stomp at festivals and one thing I will get for next year is a step stall or crate to stand on. 1) bill abbott 5 card repeat 2) no tear newspaper 3) egg bag 3.5) Bill to lemon, This is a great set and great effects. From my experiences involved resets can be a pain and some of your effects could be effected by exposure to the elements such as wind and moister. I would have a case that carries you show. But the a second case to carry spares. I would work out how many shows you will do and have that many paper tears and bill to lemon ready to go. I would also have 2-3 5 card repeats ready along with any spare eggs your need. This is from my experience also check out the video of me at a festival. The audience are a bit far away due to the punishing sun with a 15 minte burn time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqzJyYsfk7c Just a fe notes from my experience hope this help
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |
