Lenny Cohen must be wryly smiling somewhere.
You can skip to 1:00. It's pretty stunning.

One of those moments which can't help but make someone smile.

It was interesting on a friends Facebook page watching ministers of religion argue over whether this was appropriate or not - they all agreed he was very good, but wondered about whether it was more ego than generosity inspired him to do it without at least asking first.
One of the religious gentleman then posted a version of Hallelujah that a woman had rewritten with gospel appropriate lyrics, obviously one of the few to realise the song is not actually of a religious nature - but to me sacrilege - rewriting Cohen - a trifle presumptuous. |

Most of the imagery in Cohen's various versions of Hallelujah are sensual, but the song is really about the paradox of maintaining faith while suffering. Religiosly interesting to be sure, but rather odd fir a wedding imo.

I would never do this (not that I could marry anyone, anyway) unless requested and unsolicited. The day is about the bride and groom, not the person officiating. OTOH, if the bride and groom ask for it, fire away.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I saw this too on FB the first time. My thoughts at the time were, I assumed that this minister had probably known either the bride or groom since they were babes. The bride and groom seemed very pleased and his smiles at them gave me the impression one of them probably expressed interest that he sing for them and he surprised them on this day. (I'm not sure if that is the case but that's the impression I got the first time I viewed it on FB).
Wonder what the story is? |

If you read the COMPLETE lyrics to Hallelujah - NOT the Shrek version - you will find that indeed this song, like many of Leonard Cohen's great compositions are indeed about struggling with faith - have a look at the last two verses in the original version. If It Be Your Will is another fine example.
I think that what this priest did was beautiful and I sensed no ego whatsoever. It was mentioned earlier in this thread that Pope Gregory was fine with singing but drew the line at instrumentation. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, everything except the Homily is chanted or sung a capella while western Christians use musical instruments. As far as I am concerned, if the music comes from the heart and is meant to glorify God, the issue of whether instruments are present or not is mute. Lastly, it may have been a surprise but it also seems that this priest knew the bride and groom very well. But even so Chessman, I have to say that I like the fact that this priest wanted to give a very special gift. It is said that when we sing, we pray twice. |

I don't understand ANY of the controversy here. The bride and groom obviously loved it.
Totally beautiful. |

"Finally there's no conflict between things, finally everything is reconciled but not where we live. This world is full of conflicts and full of things that cannot be reconciled but there are moments when we can transcend the dualistic system and reconcile and embrace the whole mess and that's what I mean by 'Hallelujah'. That regardless of what the impossibility of the situation is, there is a moment when you open your mouth and you throw open your arms and you embrace the thing and you just say 'Hallelujah! Blessed is the name.' And you can't reconcile it in any other way except in that position of total surrender, total affirmation. They mean the same, but well, I guess that's why he's Leonard and I aint.
