@scott - I'm a bit of both mate, I love the idea of many things, but I think we (absolutely all of us, myself, you everyone) are so packed full of bias it makes it so difficult to decide on what might truly be the "final answer" to certain subject matter...
i won't talk about what this subject also touches upon, cos its against the rules... however, I do think its natural to both seek comfort, and also to supply comfort to those we see in emotional pain... so we have probably all been guilty of telling a lie to a friend when they ask "will it be ok?", and we look at them, we know that they want to hear at that moment "yes"... and they know we're lying, and they love us for doing so...just in that moment...its comfort, and just for maybe a few moments, they feel a little better, and regain a little strength all out of that lie... the problem is (in my view only), is when that lie is repeated and built upon until its so big and huge no one can dare question it, and then the imagination grabs hold of it - and it spreads more and more and more...gets retold with embellishments, with half -truths, factoids and wish fulfillment... everyone wants to be lied to at some point in their life...because we have all faced a point in life when we just need to hear someone say something to help us get through a tough moment...its why I personally think the imagination is both beautifully brilliant, and utterly terrifying in equal measure... we have created and destroyed so much with it... anyway - wish the OPs wife well...

Iain,
I find, truly every single day, great beauty and ugliness in my fellow humans. Meeting someone that is genuinely nice or good brings great joy to my heart. No exaggeration. Most of the people that I encounter do not possess any great scope and are merely attempting to get by. What they believe or not is of no consequence to me. Only that they are good or nice (genuinely, not on the surface). On another note... I am a great fan of your thinking and how you express yourself. Thank you for taking the time to share. Warm regards, Scott
